Plastilina Mosh is a Mexican alternative rock band from Monterrey , the capital of the state of Nuevo León . The band is assigned to the Avanzada Regia movement. The band consists of the guitarist and singer Jonás (actually Juan) González and the multi-instrumentalist Alejandro Rosso González, who is responsible for the creative processes and the occasional background vocals .

history

Alejandro Rosso and Jonás González met in a supermarket in Monterrey while they were playing on a Super Nintendo console . In 1996 they founded the band Plastilina Mosh.

The duo brought different musical experiences with them. González previously played in the noise rock band Koervoz de Malta and prefers groups such as Sepultura , Soda Stereo and Mano Negra . Furthermore Nirvana , Beck , Beastie Boys and the Japanese Pizzicato Five . Rosso, on the other hand, was part of the avant-garde group Acarmienses. He likes the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim and John Coltrane as well as classical . He also likes The Velvet Underground , Patsy Cline , Burt Bacharach and Thelonious Monk from the jazz area .

In early 1997, Plastilina Mosh traveled to Mexico City to record and video shoot her debut single Niño Bomba . The single released by the independent label Tómbola was sold 5,000 times. Due to the success, the media became aware of the band, which included the single and the accompanying video in their program. Plastilina Mosh received many local awards as "Best New Artist". The duo was one of the first Spanish crossover bands to be played by the American video music channel MTV .

During their first visit to Los Angeles , they met the producers of the Beastie Boys Money Mark and John King and Mike Simpson, known as The Dust Brothers, as well as the band Butthole Surfers , and they recorded their first album Aquamosh with them .

The recordings were considered extravagant and complex and took place in three stages in different cities. In Los Angeles, the songs Aquamosh and Monster Truck were recorded with the band Sukia . Sukia previously worked with the production team The Dust Brothers. The second session worked with Jason Roberts, the producer of Cypress Hill . Here her most successful song Mr. P. Mosh was created . The recording was completed with the Mexican group Café Tacuba . The album was produced by Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf in Arcata , California .

The album was released on February 24th in Mexico, on May 1st in Spain and - accompanied by a large-scale advertising campaign - on June 30th, 1998 in the USA. It was also published in the larger South American countries. From this the singles Mr. P. Mosh as well as Afroman and Monster Truck were extracted. The Spanish-speaking Mr. P. Mosh became her most successful single. In the video produced, which reached first place in the video charts of the Latin American MTV, starred actress Lyn May, well-known from the 1970s. The album sold 150,000 times.

In 2000 the successor Juan Manuel , produced by Chris Allison, was released , which contains more danceable pieces. The album was recorded in Monterrey and San Francisco and named after a friend of the band. The singles Human Disco Ball and Bassass were released .

In 2003 the concept album Hola Chicuelos was released , which was mainly produced by Rosso. The 18 pieces are based on a similar concept and ideas and were recorded by different composers instead of as a band. The best-known singles are Peligroso Pop and Te lo juro por Madonna .

In 2005 and 2006 the band took a creative break. Songs for the soundtracks of the films Puños Rosas and La mujer de mi hermano , in which Rosso played, were produced. In addition, with Tasty, a compilation of her most successful songs and the B-sides was published and supplemented by a DVD . A single millionaire sponsored the production of the album. In terms of content, a small reference to British Prime Minister Tony Blair is made in one of the songs . Plastilina Mosh contributed the song Peligroso Pop for the benefit album Silencio = Muerte: Red Hot + Latin , which was released in aid of AIDS aid in Latin America .

In 2007 the duo performed at Los Premios MTV Latinoamérica and played a fan-favorite remix of With Love with Hilary Duff . In the same year it was also represented at the first South Padre International Music Festival . Their fourth album All U Need Is Mosh came out the following year.

Plastilina Mosh played numerous concerts between 2010 and 2015 and took a break the following year. In 2017 she released the single MJLM from the 2018 album.

style

The band uses different styles of music, so they mix hip-hop beats with rock , jazz and lounge . Plastilina Mosh sings mainly in Spanish and English . In addition, the musicians enrich their songs - sometimes with guest singers - with Italian , French and Japanese . It is possible that they use two or more languages in the individual pieces.

The Internet platform Allmusic calls Plastilina Mosh a Mexican alternative rock duo whose hip-hop and experimental flourishes allow comparisons with the Beastie Boys. The US industry magazine Billboard also drew a comparison with the Beastie Boys . The discographic directory Discogs mainly uses the style names Acid Jazz and Big Beat , only the album Hola Chicuelos classified them as alternative rock. Cesar Diaz brought a whole range of style names into play on the US music website popmatters.com , including deep house and trip-hop . Peligroso Pop , the first single from Hola Chicuelos is even something new: " Dancehall- Synth-Pop".
