Raimundos is a Brazilian hardcore punk band . The name was based on the Ramones , who are one of their greatest influences. In the 1990s they were among the most successful rock bands in Brazil. Their versatile musical style opened up their enthusiasm for both the mainstream (with hits like “Mulher de fases” and “Pequena Raimunda”) and rock (with “Esporrei na Manivela” and “Puteiro em Joao Pessoa”). They were the first to combine the traditional northeastern forró with hardcore ("Marujo", "Rio das pedras") and thus created the forrócore.
Band history
The band was founded in 1987 by the band's first singer, Rodolfo Abrantes , together with the then drummer Digão in their hometown of Brasília . The two founding members were neighbors and both fans of the Ramones, after whom they named their band and were initially a pure Ramones cover band. Later on, pieces of music from northeastern Brazil were also covered, especially those by accordionist Zenilton .
When Canisso completed the trio, the first original compositions appeared and on New Year's Eve 1988 they played their first concert in a friend's house. In 1990, however, the band broke up for the first time when Rodolfo married and moved to Rio de Janeiro . When they received an invitation a few years later, they revived the band, now with Digão on guitar and a fan of the band, Fred, as the fourth member on drums. In this formation, the quartet released their first demo tape in 1993 and became known to a broad public with their appearance at the 2nd Brasilia Rockfest in front of 20,000 visitors.
They were able to continue their success with their self-released debut album Raimundos in 1994 , of which they were able to sell more than 200,000 records, and they even came to a joint appearance with the Ramones. Five more albums followed by 2000, of which together nearly 2 million copies were sold by 2001. In 2001 Rodolfo, who had meanwhile converted to Christianity, left the band again, he had since given up drugs and saw no more place for himself in the band. Instead he started a solo career in gospel music.
The Raimundos were dissolved a second time after Rodolfo's departure, only to be re-established a few months later, now with Digão in the role of singer and Marquim as the new guitarist. In 2001 they released the album Érasmos 4 , which contained concert recordings with the former Ramones drummer Marky Ramone . In 2002 the band released the album Kavookala, the only self-produced album in this composition. Shortly after the album was released, the former bassist Canisso left the band and was replaced by Alf. In 2005, the EP .Qq cOisAh , published as a free download on the MTV website, followed . Two years later there were renewed changes in the line-up: The returned Canisso replaces Alf on bass again, Fred leaves the group and is replaced by Caio, who previously worked in the bands Bicolores Sapatos and Dr. Madeira played.
In this formation the band released the DVD Roda Viva in 2011 and in 2012 an album came together with Ultraje a rigor , in which the bands covered each other. The first studio album since Kavookala in 2002 was crowdfunded in 2013 . The new album Cantigas de Roda was released in 2014 and was produced by biohazard leader Billy Graziadei . The album contains, among other things, the song Politics , with which they direct themselves against the corruption prevailing in the country. In 2017 the band released another live album, Raimundos Acústico .
