Ben Folds Five are a piano-dominated three-member rock band formed in Chapel Hill , North Carolina . The band consists of Ben Folds (lead singer, pianist / keyboardist, songwriter), Robert Sledge (electric / double bass) and Darren Jessee (drums).

Career

From the mid-1990s, Ben Folds Five released five albums, which earned them a loyal fan base and a lot of critical acclaim. Above all, the abandonment of guitars in favor of Folds' driving piano playing was perceived as original in the indie rock scene. Ben Folds himself described the band's style of music as punk rock for sissies .

After the band split up in 2000, Ben Folds continued his solo career and released solo albums under his own name. After the band got back together for a concert in 2008, a new Ben Folds Five album called The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind was released on September 14, 2012 . It took up the band's own sound from the 1990s. The album was warmly welcomed by critics.

According to Folds, the band name, which is often confusing, is due to the fact that Ben Folds Five simply sounds better than Ben Folds Three.
