At the XIX. At the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City , a hockey competition (men) took place.

Tournament mode

The 16 participants played in 2 groups A and B. The first and second of the groups qualified for the semi-finals. The third and fourth also played crosswise and then for positions 4 to 8. Places 9 to 16 were determined without cross-over games in a direct comparison between the 5th to 8th of the groups. In the playoffs, extra time was played until a decision was made. According to the IOC report, the game Netherlands - Spain lasted 144 minutes.

From October 15-22, 1967, a pre-Olympic hockey tournament was held at Lord's Cricket Ground in London, in which twelve of the 16 teams took part. As was customary at the time, 30 friendly matches were played. Each team had five games, an overall rating or table was not created.

Two German teams

The Olympic flag of both German teams in 1968

Only this once did two German teams take part in an Olympic hockey tournament. Both teams played in Group A and played the only official international match between them on October 17, 1968, under the same banner: black-red-gold with the Olympic rings. West Germany just won 3-2 and qualified for the semi-finals. There they were defeated by Pakistan with 0: 1 nV and in the game for bronze India with 1: 2. The GDR team won the game for 11th place against Great Britain 2: 1 n.V.

The 11th place (out of 16) had fatal consequences for hockey in the GDR: From then on , the government refused to give the German Hockey Sports Association almost any funding and cut off the eastern hockey players from world events for many years.

Group A

India and the Federal Republic of Germany qualified for the semi-finals. Spain and Belgium were tied at the end of the group games, but the direct comparison brought Spain 4th place in the table.

Group B

Pakistan won all group matches and was first in Group B. Australia and Kenya played a playoff for second place in the table and the associated entry into the semi-finals. In the less important cases, such as between France and Great Britain, a direct comparison decided the placement. Since Argentina and Malaysia had drawn, the number of wins decided here.
