Wolfgang Baumgart

Wolfgang Baumgart (born October 23, 1949 in Inheiden ; † February 21, 2011 ) was a German hockey player who became Olympic champion in 1972.

Wolfgang Baumgart had not yet played in the German national team when he was appointed to the squad for the 1968 Olympic Games as the youngest player . In Mexico, the half-right striker played in three games, the German team finished fourth. Four years later, at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Baumgart played eight of nine games, including the final of the first Olympic victory for the German hockey team.

For winning the gold medal at the 1972 Olympic Games, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf on May 25, 1972 together with the national hockey team.

From 1968 to 1973, Wolfgang Baumgart played a total of 65 international matches, 10 of them indoors.

Baumgart played at SC 1880 Frankfurt , with whom he became German champion in 1968, 1969 and 1970. From 1971 to 1975 the Frankfurters won the European Champion Clubs' Cup five times in a row . Besides Baumgart, Horst Dröse was another Olympic champion from 1972 in all five winning teams.
