Howard Lindsay Goodall , CBE (born May 26, 1958 in Bromley ) is a British composer .

Life

Goodall attended New College School , Oxford , Stowe School and Lord Williams's School Thame . He then studied music at Christ Church, Oxford . He is married to Val Fancourt, who looks after classical musicians as an agent.

Goodall mainly composes musicals, sacred music and film music. He became known as the composer of the theme song for the British series Blackadder and Mr Bean , both the series and the films. Goodall has received awards for sacred compositions. His works range from variations on Psalm 23 to requiums and choral works.

Goodall holds honorary doctorates from Bishop Grosseteste University College , Lincoln, the University of Bolton and the British Academy of Composers & Songwriters .

In April 2009 Goodall was nominated for the British Music Prize "Composer of the Year" and won it for his work Eternal Light: A Requiem .

Also in 2009 he was awarded an Emmy for his film music on blood, sweat and tears . In 2001 Goodall won a BAFTA TV Award.
