occupation

The feature film Blood, Sweat and Tears is an American - British co-production from 2009 with a biographical-dramatic character. Directed by Thaddeus O'Sullivan. The main character of the film is Winston Churchill , two-time British Prime Minister and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature (1953) for his political and historical works. The film shows Churchill's fight against the German Wehrmacht during the Second World War and shows how his psychological skills gave the downcast Britons motivation after the defeats with his speeches and his thirst for action and helped them to get up again. The film was nominated for 14 Primetime Emmy Awards.

action

During the Second World War , the British statesman Winston Churchill played an important role in the fight against the Nazi German Reich . It was thanks to his guidance and inspiration that millions of people did not lose their courage to fight.

The film begins in 1940 with the invasion of Belgium by German troops. At the same time, Churchill becomes the new head of government of the British Empire following the resignation of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain . His thirst for action can be felt right from the start and he is presented charismatically. A smart move right at the start is the formation of a national government coalition of all parties for the duration of the war.

The first important mission is the evacuation of the British army encircled near Dunkirk . The film shows political discussions and makes the problems of the planned mission clear. He also gives an insight into Churchill's family life. His motivation and the stress on his health from all the work is also discussed.

After the capitulation of France, the next discussion is the sinking of the French fleet so that it does not fall into Hitler's hands. Discussions on the motivation of the army are also presented. After Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor , the US also enters the war . Little by little, all of the events of World War II relevant to Great Britain are presented and Churchill's decision-making is repeatedly discussed. The discussion about victims among the German civilian population from large-scale bombing is one of the main points of the film.

The film ends with Churchill's defeat in the post-war election and how he deals with it. After all his efforts during the war, he is deeply disappointed with the result.

criticism

Brendan Gleeson embodies Churchill relatively convincingly. The numerous speeches clearly show his skills and talents. Director O'Sullivan only presents the bare essentials of the war itself, so that the meaning of the speech is not lost. However, the other important statesmen of the war like Roosevelt and Stalin only have a shadowy existence.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung praises Churchill's small human weaknesses not being left aside. He was a military man and as a result had no aversion to war. The film does not neglect the decisions and opinions of Churchill that were largely viewed critically, such as the order to bomb the previously allied French fleet. However, many critical questions are not asked.

Awards

Emmy Award for Brendan Gleeson for "Best Actor in a Miniseries or a TV Movie".
