The MTV Video Music Awards 1992 were presented on September 9, 1992. The prize was awarded to videos that premiered from June 16, 1991 to June 15, 1992. The ceremony took place at the Pauley Pavilion , Los Angeles , California . The moderator was Dana Carvey .

The winners of the evening were Van Halen and Red Hot Chili Peppers . Van Halen's video for Right Now won the Video of the Year award, while Red Hot Chili Peppers' Under the Bridge won the Audience Award. The Red Hit Chili Peppers also topped the nomination list with eight nominations for two videos.

During the show, there were several arguments between Axl Rose and the members of Nirvana as well as Courtney Love . The two bands had already quarreled throughout the year, but the dispute escalated at the VMAs. It all started backstage when Love jokingly offered Axl Rose to sponsor Frances Bean Cobain . Rose then threatened Kurt Cobain and Rose's friend Stephanie Seymour also interfered in the feud. Krist Novoselic and Duff McKagan also got into an argument, which almost escalated. Dave Grohl then used the performance to mock Axl from the stage.

It wasn't the only excitement that came from nirvana. Before the gig, MTV had tried to convince the band to play Smells Like Teen Spirit , but Cobain didn't want to be reduced to a single song. So they agreed on lithium . At the show, however, Nirvana played briefly Rape Me , the song that MTV banned them. But it should go on. Then Novoselic threw up his bass and tried to catch her. But the timing didn't work out and so he got a head wound.

While Guns N 'Roses caused quite a stir behind the scenes, Elton John and Axl Rose's joint appearance on November Rain was an attempt to resolve other disputes. Guns N 'Roses were considered homophobic based on a line of text on G N' R Lies . it was the beginning of a long friendship between the two musicians.
