Alive is a 1991 grunge song by Pearl Jam . It was the band's first single. The piece also appeared as the third song on the album Ten and is one of the most famous songs by the band and the grunge era.

Emergence

Originally called Dollar Short , the song was written by the band's rhythm guitarist, Stone Gossard . It was included on a demo tape the band hoped to find a singer with. Eddie Vedder had received the tape and wrote a fictional text that also processed some personal experiences. It was about the time he was told that the man he knew as his father was not really him.

The song was recorded on January 29, 1991 in London Bridge Studios, Seattle , Washington , then under the original band name Mookie Blaylock. Mike McCready's long guitar solo was recorded in June 1991 at Ridge Farm Studios, Dorking , England . Mixer Tim Palmer had McCready redesign the Solo after several attempts. Finally he recorded it in one piece.

reception

The piece peaked at number 16 in the UK . Steve Huey of Allmusic wrote that the piece wasn't as big a hit as the following singles, but it did help popularize Pearl Jam: “While, Alive 'had a big, stadium-ready chorus, it was so subtle, less macho, and less grandiose than true arena rock. "( Eng . While Alive had a strong, stadium-suitable refrain, it was at the same time more subtle, less emphatically masculine and less bombastic than real stadium rock . )
