Edward Leo Peter McMahon, Jr. (born March 6, 1923 in Detroit , Michigan - † June 23, 2009 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American showmaster and actor . He gained national fame in the USA as an announcer on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show from 1962 to 1992.

Life

McMahon grew up in Lowell , Massachusetts . He attended Boston College and graduated from the Catholic University of America with a Bachelor of Arts in 1949 , having previously interrupted it in favor of military service during World War II. He then served again with the United States Marine Corps as a pilot and was used in the Korean War in 1952 . He was then an officer in the reserve and retired in 1966 with the rank of colonel .

McMahon had already worked with Johnny Carson in 1957 on the game show Who Do You Trust? worked together. When Carson started the Tonight Show in 1962 , McMahon became its announcer. He was also the show master of the TV show Star Search between 1983 and 1995 and appeared in commercials, including for Budweiser . He worked as an actor in feature films and television series , but more often in cameo appearances . In 2002, McMahon sued his insurance company for over $ 20 million because he and his family were diagnosed with mold from a broken water pipe in his Beverly Hills mansion after improper repair work. The following year he received a payment of $ 7 million.

McMahon was a third marriage at the time of his death. The two divorced marriages resulted in a total of five children.
