Shakespears Sister (also Shakespear's Sister ) is a British music project. Originally founded by Siobhan Fahey as a solo project, she eventually formed a duo with Marcella Detroit , which was particularly successful between the summer of 1989 and the end of 1992 with hits like You're History , Stay and Hello (Turn Your Radio On) .

Career

After Siobhan Fahey left the group Bananarama in early 1988 , she began a solo career in the same year under the name Shakespears Sister . However, their first single, Break My Heart (You Really) / Heroine , a double A-side, flopped.

During the production of her first album, the collaboration with guitarist and singer Marcella Detroit went so well that Fahey expanded the project into a duo; nevertheless, the singular form of the name was retained. Detroit first appeared on the cover and in the video of the second single You're History as a band member.

In August 1989 Shakespears Sister released their debut album Sacred Heart , which reached a top ten placement in the UK. The single You're History was also ranked in the top 10.

The great success came in the spring of 1992 with the second album Hormonally Yours , which made it to number 3 on the British charts. The album also contained the duo's most successful track, Stay . The song became a worldwide hit and stayed at the top of the charts for eight weeks in the UK alone. The title Hello (Turn Your Radio On) , which was removed from the album in autumn 1992, also became a success in large parts of Europe and was able to achieve top 20 placements in several countries.

Shortly thereafter, however, there was tension between Fahey and Detroit, so that the last joint appearance took place on December 6, 1992 at the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party . While Detroit left the project in the spring of 1993 and went its own way, Fahey underwent psychiatric treatment for severe depression. Since the separation, the two of them did not have personal contact again until 2018.

In mid-1996, the last official single, I Can Drive , was released in Great Britain , although it only made it to number 30 in the UK single charts. After this rather moderate success, the release of the third album # 3 , which Fahey had recorded alone, was discarded by the record company London Records . The work was only available from April 2005 and could be purchased from Fahey's website. Before that, a best-of collection with all singles and an attached DVD with all videos of the band and titles that were intended for # 3 was released in autumn 2004 .

From 2009 Fahey appeared again as Shakespears sister. In November of the same year she released the album Songs From The Red Room , which mainly contained solo material from the last few years. After a renewed contact with Marcella Detroit in 2018, a reunion of Fahey and Detroit, including new music and a tour, was announced in 2019.
