After 300,000 copies of an EP could be sold, their debut album Caifanes (also known as Mátenme porque me muero, volume I ) was released in August 1988, the single Mátenme porque me muero became the band's first hit, followed by Viento and La negra Tomasa .

The second album, Volume II , better known as El Diablito , was released in 1990. On this record, Marcovich took on the role of lead guitarist for the first time, the band also attached importance to the integration of traditional Mexican elements and refrained from imitating the style of a certain group, which the band's own style could develop. El Silencio , produced by Adrian Belew , followed in 1992. In August of that year, the band played in the sold-out Hollywood Palladium and in 1993 became the first rock band in the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City. This was the last concert of the Caifanes with Sabo Romo, Herrera left the band at the end of the tour.

With the new members Fong and Zaragoza, Hernández, André and Marcovich recorded the last album, El nervio del volcán . The last single was Ayer me dijo un ave . During this time, media attention increased steadily and the band had an appearance on MTV Unplugged , as the opening act for the Rolling Stones and at the WOMAD Festival. In 1995 the band split after a dispute between Marcovich and Hernández. In 1997 the greatest hits CD La historia was released .

Since 1995 Saúl Hernández has been a member of the Jaguares, whose style is a further development of the music of the Caifanes. In 2011 the Caifanes reunited.
