Robert Steven "Adrian" Belew (born December 23, 1949 in Covington , Kentucky , USA ) is an American guitarist and composer .

Belew is best known for the progressive rock band King Crimson , where he was singer and guitarist from 1981 to 2013. Before that, Belew played with Frank Zappa , Caifanes , Talking Heads and David Bowie, among others . Belew has been a permanent member of The Bears since 1987 . The song Oh Daddy , which he sang as a duet with his daughter Audie, hit the US singles charts in 1989. Belew has worked as a producer or guest musician with Paul Simon , Mike Oldfield , Jean Michel Jarre , Nine Inch Nails , Laurie Anderson - whose hand-painted guitar he sometimes played - and Porcupine Tree , among others .

Music career

Frank Zappa invited Belew to audition in 1977 during his performance as a singer and guitarist in a music club in Nashville. Belew accompanied Zappa up to the end of his USA tour in 1978. Immediately afterwards he was engaged for a concert tour and studio recordings by David Bowie, who met Belew at a concert on this tour. Belew plays guitar on the albums Stage and Lodger . It was through Robert Fripp that Belew met producer Brian Eno , who hired him to play guitar for the Talking Heads album Remain in Light . He can be heard on several tracks on this album on guitar solos and accompanies the Talking Heads on their concert tour.

In 1981, Belew was offered by Robert Fripp to play the second guitar in the succession of his band King Crimson. Although Belew was offered at the same time to take over the lead guitar for the well-known and successful Talking Heads and thus to replace founding member David Byrne , he decided on the new project, which was ultimately continued under the well-known name of King Crimson . Belew became a member in April 1981 and remained so for 32 years, along with all of his other musical projects, until 2013.

In 2017 Belew formed a new band called Gizmodrome with Level 42 bassist Mark King and Police drummer Stewart Copeland .
