He started his career in the second half of the 1960s with the band Les Fleur de Lys . He became known as a substitute bassist and singer in the progressive rock band King Crimson of his school friend Robert Fripp , with whom he had previously been active in the band The League of Gentlemen . As a favor to his old friend, he took part in the albums In the Wake of Poseidon and Lizard , because Fripp was missing a singer due to a line-up change, but left the band during rehearsals for the following live performances, as his more on folk and rhythm and bluesoriented musical interests could not be reconciled with the King Crimson concept. In addition, as he describes in his autobiography, he said he heard something cold, even devilish, in the music of King Crimson.
After leaving King Crimson in 1972, Haskell released the album It Is and It Isn't, which, however, only sold poorly. His record company dropped him and Haskell tried to continue living as a musician for the next several decades. He made his way as a (bar) musician in hotels, pubs and on ferries, mostly alone, sometimes in collaboration with other colleagues. From 1984 to 1992 he lived in Denmark. In between he kept recording records, but none of them could prevail. After a manager approached him after a club gig, he recorded some songs in the studio in 2001.
He became known around the world during Christmas 2001 with his surprise hit How Wonderful You Are, an R'n'B ballad from his album Harry's Bar. Both the single and the album reached second place in the UK charts. The single won silver, while the album even went gold in the UK. The follow-up album Shadows on the Wall reached number 44 in the UK charts in 2002.
Haskell described his experiences as a musician and a person in his 2006 autobiography The Road to Harry's Bar.
