Starless and Bible Black is an album released in 1974 by the progressive rock band King Crimson .

Emergence

King Crimson, who had earned a reputation as an outstanding live band since their formation in 1969, began to transfer the musical style of their live performances to their studio albums with the album Larks' Tongues in Aspic . The following album, Starless and Bible Black , was largely made during some live performances in late 1973. The tracks Trio , Fracture , We'll Let You Know , The Mincer and the title track were concert recordings that were reworked in the studio, which gave the album the character of a live atmosphere. Only the first two tracks, The Great Deceiver and Lament , were recorded exclusively in the studio. In early 1974, Robert Fripp was the last remaining founding member of the group.

Musical background and reception

Due to the concert origin of most of the recordings and the numerous improvisations typical of King Crimson during the concerts, Starless and Bible Black is widely regarded as the most experimental album of this phase. Above all, numerous changes in tempos and dynamic guitar riffs characterized the album. The title "Starless and Bible Black" comes from Dylan Thomas ' radio play Under Milk Wood and was also used for Starless , the fifth track on the following King Crimson album Red . The concert, from which the titles Trio , Fracture and Starless and Bible Black were taken, was published in full in 1997 under the name The Nightwatch .
