Beat is the ninth studio album by King Crimson and the second after the reunion of the band in 1981. It was published 1982nd The song Heartbeat was released as a single and reached number 57 on the US charts. The album itself came in at number 52. It was the first time in the band's history that there was no personnel change between two studio albums.

Style and reception

Musically, the band moves on the New Wave style that they introduced with Discipline . Fripp and Belew's different guitar textures, Levin's explorations of the bass and the unusual drum rhythms make the album especially interesting for musicians. Tony Levin uses the Chapman Stick again on this album . Greg Pato from allmusic gave the album 4½ out of 5 stars, but doesn't think it's as good as the previous album Discipline .

With the title and in individual pieces, the band refers to the beat poets and in particular to the novel On the Road by Jack Kerouac , which had appeared 25 years earlier.

  • Neal and Jack and Me refers to the novel On the Road and the protagonists Neal Cassady (in the book Dean Moriarty) and Jack Kerouac from the perspective of their car, a 1952 Studebaker Starlite Coupé .
  • Heart Beat is the title of an autobiographical novel by Carolyn Cassady , Neal Cassady's wife.
  • Sartori in Tangier is a modification of the title of another book by Jack Kerouac, Satori in Paris . Tangier was a popular travel destination and home of some beatniks in the 1950s , e.g. B. William S. Burroughs and Paul Bowles
  • Neurotica was the title of a small magazine in which Allen Ginsberg published his poems.
  • The Howler refers to the poet Allen Ginsberg and his poem Howl .
