Hurt is one of the most famous songs by Trent Reznor , the singer of the band Nine Inch Nails . The piece was also recorded by country singer Johnny Cash in 2002, whose cover version far exceeds the popularity of the original.

The piece was released in 1994 on the concept album The Downward Spiral , followed by releases as a promo single and also on the remix album Further Down the Spiral . Live versions of the song can be found on And All That Could Have Been (2002) and Beside You in Time (2007).

Like the other songs on the album, Hurt is part of a story in which the protagonist falls into depression and slowly turns from human to machine, and since it is the 14th and final track, the end of the story. It represents the suicide note from the protagonist, who committed suicide in the previous song The Downward Spiral - or at least tried to.

Cover version of Johnny Cash

In 2002 Johnny Cash reinterpreted the song on his album American IV: The Man Comes Around . Cash had originally turned down the suggestion of his producer Rick Rubin to record the piece because he couldn't do anything with the original version of the Nine Inch Nails. Only after Rubin recorded a demo of the song for Cash, the latter decided to record the piece; he later hailed it as the best anti-drug song he had ever heard. Rubin then asked Reznor if he would allow Cash to release a cover version of Hurt . The Nine Inch Nails frontman received the taped version in the mail two weeks after the call.

Reznor added that it was still a great honor for him, as Johnny Cash, one of the greatest singers and songwriters of all time, wanted to cover one of his songs. That fact would mean more to him than the music industry Grammys .

The cover received the CMA Award Single of the Year 2003, in May 2008 the single was still number one in the “Top Singles of the 2000s” on Rate Your Music .

The cover video, directed by Mark Romanek , won a Grammy for Best Music Short Video in 2004 and Music Video Of The Year 2003 at the Country Music Awards.

Commercial win

When the version by Johnny Cash was released as a CD single (together with a cover version of the Depeche Mode song Personal Jesus ), the title was able to place itself in the German single charts for six weeks in 2003. It reached number 82. After Das Erste had aired a 45-minute documentary about Johnny Cash in August 2010 , Hurt was also increasingly bought on download portals and hit the charts again. The title reached the highest demand and placement (68th place) in February 2012 after Behnam Moghaddam interpreted it in the casting show The Voice of Germany . The version by Moghaddam was also able to place itself and reached number 31, the highest chart price for the title in Germany to date.

More cover versions

  • In 2004, Zimbl , the former singer of the Bates, covered the song on his solo album Bubblegum Trash Forever .
  • In late 2011, British singer Leona Lewis released a version of Hurt . This reached number 8 in the British charts.
  • Also in 2011, the American post-hardcore / metalcore band Hundredth released a cover version on the album Let Go .
  • Another arrangement was released in spring 2013 by Youn Sun Nah on her album Lento .
  • In July 2013, the Bochum band Secret Discovery released their version of the hit.
  • In 2015 the song was covered by the German band Mindead on the album Controlling the Tides .
  • In 2016, a version of the Portuguese fado singer Mísia followed on her album Do Primeiro Fado Ao Ultimo Tango .
  • In 2017 the Swedish band In Flames covered the song for their EP "Down, Wicked & No Good", after the song had been played in an acoustic version at live concerts since 2012 .
