Youn Sun Nah (born August 28, 1969 in Seoul ) is a South Korean jazz singer and songwriter.

Live and act

Youn Sun Nah grew up as the daughter of a conductor and a classical singer. At the age of 23 she made her debut as a singer at a concert with the Korean Symphony Orchestra . Numerous appearances in musicals followed on a national level , for which she received several awards. Among other things, she worked in the Korean version of the musical Line 1 .

Although Youn Sun Nah's roots are in the musical field, the boundaries of this very fast-moving, commercial scene became too narrow for her. So she decided in 1995 to Paris to go to there at the CIM, one of the oldest jazz schools in Europe , jazz and French chanson study. She also attended the State Music Institute in Beauvais and the Boulanger Conservatory. As a singer in a quintet, she met the musicians of the Parisian jazz scene in Parisian clubs. Her name became known in France through festival appearances. She continued to perform regularly in South Korea.

Between 2001 and 2007, Youn Sun Nah recorded five albums. She toured France, Europe and all of Asia including her homeland in South Korea. Her performances brought the singer in 2004 in South Korea the award "Best Artist" in the category "Crossover". In 2005 she won the Grand Prix at the Jazz à Juan Concours and an award as the best young artist in South Korea. In 2007 their album Memory Lane was released , co-produced by Danish pianist Niels Lan Doky and South Korean bassist Kim Jeong-ryul. From Wynton Marsalis she received an invitation to the "Jazz at Lincoln Center" concert series.

In 2009 the singer was signed exclusively to ACT . She recorded her ACT debut Voyage , which was released in 2009, with the Swedish musicians Ulf Wakenius and Lars Danielsson . The follow-up album Same Girl was released in autumn 2010.

At the closing ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , she sang a short version of the Korean folk song Arirang .

Awards

In 2010 she received the Korean Music Award in the category “Jazz and Crossover Album of the Year” for the fourth time . In Germany she was honored with the Echo Jazz 2011 as “best female singer international”. In 2010 she won the audience award at the “BMW Welt Jazz Award”.

The French Ministry of Culture honored Youn Sun Nah with the “Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” . She received the “Prix Mimi Perrin du Jazz Vocal” as singer of the year from the French Jazz Academy. In addition, Youn Sun Nah won the “CHOC Award” from French Jazz Magazine ; by the jazz magazine "So Jazz" she was chosen among the discoveries of the year. At the G20 summit in Seoul in November 2010, she appeared before the heads of state of the 20 countries.
