Niels Lan Doky (born October 3, 1963 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish jazz musician (piano, composition).

Live and act

Doky, the son of a Vietnamese guitarist and a Danish singer, was promoted at the age of fifteen by Ernie Wilkins and Thad Jones , the head of the Danish Radio Big Band . This encouraged him to go to the United States , where he attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston from 1981 to 1984 . He then moved to New York City , where he quickly became a member of the jazz scene and worked with musicians such as Joe Henderson , Clark Terry , Charlie Haden , Ray Brown , David Sanborn , Woody Shaw , Jack DeJohnette , Al Jarreau , John Scofield , and Michael Randy Brecker and Toots Thielemans worked.

In 1986, Here and There was his first own album as a band leader, which was followed by more than twenty more. In addition, he brought out numerous albums as a producer. Doky lived in Paris since 1989 . In 1994 he composed the score for a documentary about the Danish Queen Margrethe II. In 1995 he and his brother Chris Minh Doky recorded two albums as Doky Brothers for the Blue Note label .

A trip to China and Vietnam brought about a return to his Asian roots; His album Asian Sessions was recorded with singer Thanh Lam in Hanoi , Beijing , Paris, Copenhagen and Gothenburg . In December 2000 he appeared with Gino Vannelli before Pope John Paul II in an audience that was televised worldwide. In 2002, the dance performance The Butterfly was created in Denmark under the choreographer Birgitte Bauer-Nilsen .

In 2005 he made his debut as a filmmaker with Between a Smile and a Tear , a documentary about Copenhagen's legendary jazz club Jazzhus Montmartre , which he reopened in 2010. In 2013, together with Claus Meyer, he opened The Standard, a second jazz club in Copenhagen. According to Tom Lord , between 1984 and 2011, he was involved in 82 phonogram recording sessions.

Prizes and awards

Doky was honored by the Danish royal family and won the Golden Disc - Seal of Approval Award in 2002 for the album Casa Dolce Casa and in 2003 for the album Spain . In 2008 he and his brother Chris received the Ben Webster Prize .
