Secret Discovery is a rock band from Bochum , whose style was initially strongly based on bands such as Fields of the Nephilim , The Sisters of Mercy or The Mission , but in contrast to these bands, metal and hard rock elements were compositionally processed early on. Over time, their own sound developed, which can be described as German-speaking dark rock .

history

The band was founded in 1989 by the brothers Kai (vocals) and Falk Hoffmann (guitar), Michael Gusky (guitar) and Mattes Glathe (bass). The first LP Way to Salvation was self-pressed and distributed in 1989. Roland Wolf joined the band in 1990 as the first drummer. Before the first official record release, he was replaced by Thom Thüs. From 1992 to 1994 the band released three albums on various independent labels , and songs were also released on several compilations of the black scene . During this time they played live with Cassandra Complex and Philip Boa, among others . In 1994, Secret Discovery changed guitarist Gusky and Dirk Schulz took over for him. This stayed until 1995 and was replaced by Jürgen Scholz. With Lars Graebe a new drummer was hired.

Gun Records signed Secret Discovery in 1995 and had them record the album Questions of Time , which was released in 1996. The band has now managed to reach five-figure sales and the level of awareness in the Gothic Metal scene increased. This was followed by appearances at the Out of the Dark festivals with Moonspell , Crematory and The Gathering . In 1996 the band went on tour as support for Rammstein . Philharmonic Diseases (1996) was recorded with a chamber orchestra . In 1997 Secret Discovery took part in a tour with Rage .

Slave was released in 1997 and again used a heavier style of music. With Slave to the Rhythm , a cover version of the Grace Jones classic is featured on the album. With Dirk Riegner a keyboardist joined the band. Jürgen Scholz got out, the band continued with a guitarist. With My Dying Bride , Sentenced and Dark , the Out of the Dark festivals were completed again towards the end of the year . In 1999 the last album was released before the band split up: The Final Chapter . It appeared as a kind of best-of album with rare material and new songs. After a successful final tour the band split up; there is another live album to follow .

In 2002 Secret Discovery got together again and strengthened themselves with Ramses Razmjoo as an additional guitarist. Martin Hirsch became the band's new bass player. Pray , the reunion album, was released in 2004. Several single gigs with Oomph! , Tiamat and Nightwish follow. The last album to date, Alternate , was released in 2006. The following tour was completed with Unheilig . In 2012 Lars Graebe left the band and Carsten Witte joined the band as a drummer. In addition, founding member Michael Gusky (Pucky) came back to the band and replaced Ramses on guitar. The band played a festival show at the Leipzig Wave Gotik Treffen as well as at the Blackfield Open Air in Gelsenkirchen and a club concert in the Bochum KULT Club.

In 2013 the band worked on new song material. Singer Kai Hoffmann is working parallel to the songwriting on a project called SECRET 2, for which he rearranged the band's songs in electronic, orchestral form. An elementary part of SECRET 2 is the visual component in the form of atmospheric video projections. He was supported by Torsten Sickert (Zeche Bochum), with whose help this project was premiered on December 27th of the same year in the Zeche Bochum. In May 2014 the band released the song Auf Wiedersehen (In the direction of victory) for the World Cup as a download. The inspiration for this idea was the former professional soccer player Holger Aden , who, as a long-time friend of the singer Kai Hoffmann, gave a guest performance here on bass. The band also publishes a corresponding video on YouTube.
