Markus Zimmer (musician)
Markus Zimmer , called Zimbl (born October 7, 1964 in Eschwege ; † June 18, 2006 in Kassel ), was a German musician and singer in the band The Bates .
Life
Markus Zimmer was born in Eschwege as Markus Ernst Eugen Zimmer. He grew up in Reichensachsen , a small town near Eschwege, with his parents and with his younger brother Mario. In 1971 he started school in Reichensachsen primary school and began taking guitar lessons at the same time. From 1975 he attended the Gymnasium am Leuchtberg in Eschwege, but later switched to the Realschule.
In 1979 his musical career began with the founding of the band " Sticky Fingers " with a friend, named after the Rolling Stones album of the same name . The first performances took place in the Eschwege youth center. In 1983, after graduating from secondary school, he completed 14 months of military service with the tank destroyers in Sontra . The band renamed itself Nuclear Graffity , Zimbl also took over the vocal part.
In 1984, Nuclear Graffity consisted of
- Markus Zimbl Zimmer (bass and vocals),
- Armin Beck (solo guitar),
- Frank Klube Klubescheid (drums) and
- Thomas Pogo Möller (rhythm guitar).
In 1986 Nuclear Graffity became The Bates . The punk band was best known for numerous cover versions. With the band he had a number of chart successes in several European countries. 2001 the band broke up due to internal disputes. He then released two solo albums. The first album "Unplugged" was released in July 2003 and in August 2004 the second album "Bubblegum Trash Forever" followed. Both appeared only in small numbers.
Markus Zimmer died on June 18, 2006 at the age of 41 due to cardiovascular failure in his apartment in Kassel. He was found two days later.
Reminiscences
As a musical souvenir, the sampler A Tribute To Zimbl - Rocking On Heaven's Door was released in 2006, which includes songs by Zimbl and The Bates as well as contributions by other artists such as Bela B and Project Pitchfork . The first pressing of 1000 copies sold out quickly, and the proceeds went to the Global Care charity.
On December 28, 2006, the so-called “Zimbl Tribute” with the name “ Rocking on heaven's door ” took place in Kassel . The “SPOT” disco was sold out. That evening his friends, family and fans from all over Germany were there. There were slide shows and performances by various bands. “THE BATES Allstars” appeared as headliners - for the first time completely, with (almost) all members who have ever played in the band.
Zimbl - A Real Cool Time
In 2008 the documentary Zimbl - A Real Cool Time was released. He portrays Zimmer and the tribute “Rocking on heaven's door” held in his honor. His family and friends, the band The Bates and old companions like Bela B. are interviewed. In addition, there are unpublished video recordings of Zimbl during The Bates “ Pleasure + Pain ” tour in 1995, as well as recordings of Zimbl's solo performance in Witten (2003). Music by Sanoé as well as songs by Zimbl and The Bates underline the images.
