Where the Streets Have No Name ( English for Where the streets have no name ) is a piece of the Irish band U2 . It is the first song on their 1987 album The Joshua Tree and was released as their third single in August 1987. The hook of Where the Streets Have No Name is a repetitive Gitarrenarpeggio in which a delay effect is used, which is played at the beginning and end of the song. Lead singer Bono wrote the lyrics in response to the notion that it is possible to identify a person's religion and income based on the street they live on, especially in the city of Belfast. During the recording, protracted difficulties arose in recording the song to the satisfaction of the musicians, which almost led one of the two producers, Brian Eno, to delete the previous recordings in order to start over. He was dissuaded at the last moment by a sound engineer.

Where the Streets Have No Name received a positive response from critics and was a commercial success for the band. The piece became one of U2's most popular and has been played regularly by the band at their concerts since 1987.
