background

Swift during her appearance on Good Morning America introducing I Knew You Were Trouble .

During Swift's appearance at the 2012 iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas in September 2012, she told Rolling Stone that she was beginning to gradually announce the songs for her fourth studio album, Red . When Swift introduced I Knew You Were Trouble on Good Morning America on October 8, 2012 , she said the song is “one of the album's favorite songs because it sounds as messy as I felt when I wrote it would have."

I Knew You Were Trouble was released as the third promo single , after the two songs Begin Again and Red , of the album Red on October 9, 2012 on iTunes . From November 27, 2012, the song was broadcast to various contemporary hit radio stations in the United States, making it the third official single from the album Red after We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together and Begin Again . The single CD was released on December 13, 2012, and from the same day on Swift's official website an I Knew You Were Trouble package, consisting of a black T-shirt , a red bag , a writing pad and the one with an individual number CD single, available for purchase. In the United Kingdom , I Knew You Were Trouble was released on December 10, 2012 as the album's second single release.

As of November 2014, Swift took all of her songs from music streaming provider Spotify . Nevertheless, media reported in December 2015 that I Knew You Were Trouble is available again on Spotify, but Lostprophets was incorrectly named as the artist . The song was removed from the platform shortly after this incident became known.

Musical and content

I Knew You Were Trouble was written by Swift, Max Martin and Shellback , the latter also producing the song. Swift played the melody on the piano and sang the bass line , Martin and Shellback developed the final mix from this and added dubstep elements. According to Sarah Maloy of Billboard magazine , I Knew You Were Trouble is a move away from Swift's signature country songs to pop music . The song's instrumentation includes bass guitar , electric guitar and keyboard . I Knew You Were Trouble is composed in four-four time and has a tempo of 154 beats per minute . Swift's vocal range extends from B 3 to E 5 in the song written in E flat minor . The song has the chord progression IV-vi-IV.

In an interview with MTV , Swift stated that I Knew You Were Trouble tells the story of a girl who falls in love with a "bad boy" and the progression of that "poisoned relationship" between the two and the inevitable breakup. Swift said in an interview that she had had the experience herself: “I think it was the first time for me that I realized that I was curious about something, even though I knew it was not good for me was. But you know very well that you will do it anyway, because you would regret it more afterwards if you hadn't tried out where it would have led you. ”The chorus shows the premonition of the lyric self , the new experiences, but also the end the relationship clearly:

"I knew you were trouble when you walked in
So shame on me now
Flew me to places I'd never been
Now I'm lying on the cold hard ground"

- Refrain, original excerpt

"I knew you would get me in trouble when you stepped in
Shame on me
Took me to places I've never been
Now I'm lying on the cold, hard ground"

- Refrain, German translation

Reviews

I Knew You Were Trouble received both positive and negative reviews. The Dasding youth radio found that the song simply "puts you in a good mood". Jon Caramanica of the New York Times praised the song and called it "one of the greatest pop songs of the year". Entertainment Weekly editor Ray Rahman compared I Knew You Were Trouble to "the same kind of defiant radio pop that made Swift's other album release, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, a number one hit." The Lewis Corner song received four out of five possible stars from Digital Spy . Corner compared the interaction of Swift and Dubstep with that of peanut butter and jam and concluded that the result was "surprisingly satisfactory". The Billboard magazine finds that it is entertaining to watch Swift in its attempt of "Electro-Country".

Kai Butterweck from Laut.de , on the other hand, criticizes the song as a " Britney slip" and thinks other songs on Swift's album Red are better. Kai Wehmeier from Plattentests.de found the album Red to be “clumsy” and “mediocre”. He added the following to I Knew You Were Trouble : "Swift tries" I knew you were trouble. " even modern electro-pop, which, however, robs the woman from Pennsylvania of any artistic trademarks ”. The Washington Post author Allison Stewart also gave the song a negative rating, describing the dubstep influences built in by Martin and Shellback as "redundant" and "awful". James Reed of The Boston Globe thinks Swift sounds vaguely like " Katy Perry and Joan Jett " on I Knew You Were Trouble .

Music video

Filming of the music video for I Knew You Were Trouble began on November 18, 2012 in Los Angeles. The video was directed by Anthony Mandler and first aired on MTV on December 13, 2012 . The role of Swift's lover in the video is played by Reeve Carney , who is known as Peter Parker / Spider-Man from the musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark . The video starts with a voiceover from Swift. Swift wakes up on the floor of a deserted desert, surrounded by trash and debris, and wearing dark makeup . Flashbacks show Swift and her lover in different scenes, including getting to know each other and having experiences together, but interrupted by scenes in which Swift appears sad and full of self-doubt. During an outdoor concert in a desert, she sees him kissing some other women. She falls asleep on the floor while the party goes on at the concert. At this point she woke up alone at the beginning of the videos.

The Rolling Stone highlighted the similarities between Swift's music video and Rihanna's We Found Love music video . The video won the Best Female Video category at the MTV Video Music Awards 2013 and was also nominated in the Video of the Year category. It's the second time Swift has won this category, the first time being with You Belong with Me at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards . Currently (as of October 2018) the video for I Knew You Were Trouble was viewed over 315 million times on Vevo and over 415 million times on YouTube .
