background

Like Swift's fifth studio album in 1989 , which includes Style , the song was written and produced by Swedish music producers Max Martin and Shellback , alongside Swift himself . Ali Payami also co-produced this song.

Musical and content

Style is written in D major and has a tempo of 92 beats per minute . Swift's vocal range ranges from B 3 to D 5 . According to Swift, the song describes a relationship in which both partners meet other people, but always think of the other partner. This is also made clear by the following passage in the bridge :

"I say, 'I heard, oh, that you've been out and about with some other girl, some other girl'
He says," What you've heard is true but I
Can't stop thinking about you "and I. ...
I said, 'I've been there too a few times'. "

- Bridge, original excerpt

"I say, 'I heard you went out with another girl,'
he says," What you heard is true, but I
can't stop thinking about you "and I ...
I said, 'I've been in this situation a few times too '. "

- Bridge, German translation

Some media suspected that Swift was addressing her former boyfriend Harry Styles with this song , which Swift neither confirmed nor denied.

Reviews

Style received a positive response from the critics. Kai Butterweck from Laut.de wrote in the context of the album review for 1989 about Style : "Songs like the" Style "pepped up with funky guitars [...] prove that a studio in which good pop music is to be created does not necessarily have to look like this Interior of a space shuttle cockpit. Less is sometimes more". The Guardian described Style as "a leaked funk-pop number that satisfies on every level". Jon Caramanica of the New York Times called the song the highlight of the album and compared it to the Miami Vice soundtrack. The Los Angeles Times called Style a "sensual funk pop song".

Music video

The music video for Style was directed by Kyle Newman . In addition to Swift himself, Dominic Sherwood plays Swift's friend in the music video . The video starts with a silhouette of Swift's head showing her boyfriend standing on a coast. This is followed by scenes with various flashbacks, interrupted by scenes in which the friend wakes up in a bed. When the chorus begins, the Dominic holds a shard in front of his face in which Swift's lips can be seen overlaying his lips. More scenes follow in which images of Swift and her boyfriend are superimposed through the mirror. In the further course of the video you can see both people in a room with dimmed lights where they are kissing. The video ends with the man stopping his car and Swift, who was sitting on the ground in the forest in front of the car, gets up and walks over to him. Currently (as of October 2018) the video has been viewed over 354 million times on Vevo and over 558 million times on YouTube.

Commercial win

Due to the release of the album in 1989 and the resulting high digital purchases by Style , the song was already able to enter the Billboard Hot 100 at number 60 on November 15, 2014 , but fell out of these charts again in the coming week. In December 2015, Swift was awarded triple platinum for Style by the Recording Industry Association of America .

Style entered the UK single charts on February 21, 2015 at number 65 and stayed in the charts for a total of 19 weeks. Although it did not reach the top 20 in these charts, Style was still sold over 400,000 times, which earned the song a gold record from the British Phonographic Industry . In the German music charts was style less successful. With interruptions, the song spent a total of seven weeks in these charts, with number 76, the highest ranking was reached on April 21, 2015.
