Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is a rock - musical with music by Bono and The Edge of U2 . It premiered on New York's Broadway on June 14, 2011 . At around $ 70 million, it is the most expensive musical to ever appear on Broadway. It was played in the Foxwoods Theater . The playing time is almost three hours.

The plot follows the comic book Spider-Man from Marvel Comics . As early as 2002 it became public that Tony Adams was planning a musical. On October 20, 2005, Bono signed the contract. A few days later, Adams died.

The musical works through spectacular stunts : Fights between the superhero and his opponent Grüner Kobold take place in the air above the audience in the stalls. The stunts were also the reason why several actors were injured during the rehearsal phase.

By June 2011, the musical had over 180 mostly sold out previews, although the reviews were mostly bad and the audience had to pay full price. The premiere was postponed six times. It took place on June 14, 2011 in the presence of numerous celebrities: Ex-President Bill Clinton and his daughter Chelsea , composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and tennis legend John McEnroe , TV presenter Barbara Walters , director Spike Lee and the actors Matt Damon , Steve Martin , Liam Neeson and Vanessa Redgrave were in the audience.

In December 2013 it was announced that the musical would only run in New York until January 2014. The last of a total of 1,066 regular performances took place on January 4, 2014. But a future production in Las Vegas is being planned .
