Interpol is an indie rock - and post-punk - band from New York . The band, founded in 1997, has released six studio albums to date.

Band history

Interpol was founded in 1997. Between 1997 and 2000 they wrote the first songs together and rented recording studios to record their songs. During this time, they were inspired by the city of New York.

In 2000 drummer Greg Drudy left Interpol. The reasons for his exit are unknown. The band was replaced by Sam Fogarino, whom Daniel Kessler knew from the record store in the neighborhood. Fogarino had already gained experience in various bands and brought a portion of post-punk into the band. Then they played several gigs in clubs such as the Brownies , the Mercury Lounge or the Bowery Ballroom .

At the end of 2000 they released their first EP on the Scottish label Chemikal Underground . At the same time they released the hitherto unknown track Song Seven . After various sessions on the London radio station XFM , they gained considerable prominence abroad. In April 2001 Interpol performed in Glasgow, Manchester and London and were given the opportunity to play in the John Peel Sessions .

In November 2001, the band moved back to Connecticut , where they began recording their debut album at Tarquin Studios. The album was recorded and mixed by Peter Katis (Mercury Rev, Clem Snide) and Gareth Jones ( Depeche Mode , Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds , Clinic). Their debut Turn on the Bright Lights received critical acclaim and brought them international attention. The debut album advanced to the ranking of the indie magazine Pitchfork in 2002 as the best album of the year. REM covered the song NYC in 2004 . After the publication, concerts and appearances on various radio stations followed.

The Black EP was released in August 2003 . It features four live versions of their debut album from a French radio concert Black Session as well as the song Specialist , which previously only appeared on the rare Interpol EP in 2002 and has also been on Music from the OC Mix 2 , the OST to OC, California, since 2005 . can be found.

In September 2004 they presented their second record called Antics . This album also received positive reviews, sold better than the debut album and underpinned Interpol's status as one of the most important bands on today's independent music scene. In contrast to the darkly broken Turn On the Bright Lights, Antics is more straightforward and also contains “more positive” songs, but Interpol stayed true to their morbid-romantic style overall.

After the Antics tour, the band took a year off. In the meantime, the song Direction became the soundtrack of the US television series Six Feet Under . In the 5th episode ( Shake Your Groove Thing / The Last of Responsibility ) of the 1st season of the doctor series Grey's Anatomy , the song Evil was also used for the soundtrack in 2005 .

Interpol recorded their third album Our Love to Admire in a studio in New York . The album was released on July 9, 2007 in the USA on Capitol Records , on July 10 in the UK on Parlophone and on July 7 in Germany. Our Love to Admire , like its predecessors, is kept dark in its basic mood.

In 2009 Paul Banks released his first solo album under the name Julian Plenti . The album is titled Julian Plenti Is ... Skyscraper .

In spring 2010 the band recorded their fourth album, produced by Alan Moulder . Shortly after completion, bassist Carlos Dengler left the band for personal reasons. The fourth studio album Interpol was released in September 2010. After their label Matador announced their first artistic collaboration with the director David Lynch in 2011 , the latter shot the short film I Touch A Red Button Man entitled Lights from the Interpol album . The premiere took place on April 5, 2012 in New York.

After the North American tour in spring 2011, bassist Dave Pajo left the band for personal reasons. Pajo's successor is Brad Truax . In 2010 and 2011, Interpol provided support in Europe and North America for 17 concerts of Leg 3 and 6 of the U2 360 ° tour .

At the end of 2011 it was announced that Interpol would support the benefit album We Are The Works In Progress for the tsunami victims in Japan with the song Seven , which was released in 2000 .

In early September 2014, the band's fifth studio album, the first after Carlos Dengler left, was released under the name El Pintor . The album name (Spanish for The Painter ) is an anagram of the band name Interpol. The first single was All the Rage Back Home in August 2014 . The song reached number 26 on the American Billboard Alternative Song Charts. In August 2014, the band began the El Pintor tour in North America, which continued in Europe in the winter of 2015. During the fall 2014 tour, the band got stuck 50 hours after a snow storm near Buffalo and had to cancel three concerts in Toronto and Boston . As the second single from the album, Everything is wrong was released in November 2014 , for which a video was released on January 22, 2015. In late 2014, Interpol worked with street artist Shepard Fairey , who did the album artwork on a house in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (North 7th Street and Driggs Avenue) and produced a number of signed graphic prints.

El Pintor reached number 44 on the annual album chart of the music magazine Rolling Stone in 2014 .

On June 7, 2018, the band in Mexico City announced the release of their sixth studio album, Marauder , on August 24, 2018, including a subsequent tour. Marauder was from producer Dave Fridman produced the stage with bands such as The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev worked. At the same time, the album's first single, The Rover , was released, which Internet radio ByteFM described as a “typical Interpol track, with a melodic, two-part guitar work and a post-punk- inspired beat”.

style

The band's sound is based heavily on the melancholy post-punk and new wave of English bands of the early 80s. In this context, Interpol are often compared to Joy Division , the post-punk flagship band. Interpol have always refused to be pigeonholed in the Joy Division drawer.

However, there are similarities with other style-defining bands of this time, such as The Chameleons or Gang of Four , which manifest themselves in particular in the guitar sound.

Interpol also differs from the crowd of retro guitar bands that have come from New York since 2001 with the hype surrounding young neo-punk bands ( The Strokes , Liars , Yeah Yeah Yeahs ) in their self-portrayal. When performing, the band is always shrouded in fog and lit from behind, the audience is rarely looked at or spoken to. Interpol follow a strict dress code .
