Turn On the Bright Lights is the debut album by the New York post-punk revival band Interpol . The album was recorded in November 2001 at Tarquin Studios , Bridgeport , Connecticut and released on August 19, 2002 in Great Britain and on August 20, 2002 in the United States on Matador Records . The album reached number 101 in the UK album charts and number 158 on the American Billboard 200 in 2002. The album was in the US independent charts for 73 weeks and climbed into the top 5 of the charts.

Release

The album was immediately preceded by the release of the EP Interpol on June 4, 2002. The EP was the first collaboration with the independent label Matador Records , while the earlier EPs were distributed by smaller independent labels or as an in-house production. Three titles were released on the EP, of which PDA and NYC also appeared on Turn On the Bright Lights . The third song Specialist was only used as a bonus song in the Japanese, Mexican and Australian bonus editions. The song PDA , first published in 2000 on the promo EP Fukd ID # 3 , was released as a radio single in the run-up to the album release. The minimalist artwork for Turn On the Bright Lights was designed by Sean McCabe, the band photo in the booklet is by Andrew Zaeh. The title name of the album refers to the line of text "It is up to me now, turn on the bright lights" in the song NYC .

Reviews

The moderate sales success of the debut album was in stark contrast to the reviews of the trade press. Pitchfork Media named the Interpol debut album Album of the Year 2002.

Vicky Butscher (laut.de) summed up Turn On the Bright Lights :

“As mystical as English bands twenty years ago and as gloomy as a bright glow in a deep street, you find yourself in the middle of the flaming New York remake heart. Depressions standing at attention hover over the corpses of British post-punk and remain puzzlingly stuck to melodies, while an Ian Curtis clone sings stylishly broken about the suffering of interpersonal relationships. Interpol's instruments roam through a broad-based sound that becomes overwhelmingly large thanks to Daniel Kessler's gushing guitar work. Vomiting perfection that pays off, although every second is organized down to the smallest detail, but still sounds like a rehearsal room. By no means overproduced, just damn ingeniously presented. "

Andreas Borcholte ( Spiegel Online ) wrote one of the first German-language reviews on bugged :

“With Interpol, another band from New York City comes on the scene, which also seems to have been torn from the past. The four Americans around singer Paul Banks have dedicated themselves entirely to the New Wave sound of the early eighties on their grandiose debut album and accordingly sound as if they were more Mancunians than Nuyoricans. So everything else happens on 'Turn on The Bright Lights'. Instead, Interpol gloomily, depressed and feverishly search for models like Joy Division and early Cure , at times even appearing as 'doomy' as the forgotten Fields of the Nephilim . The lyrics are just as abysmal, where Banks mostly talks about drugs and existential fears in a threatening, sometimes plaintive voice. An almost perfect soundtrack for forays through gray Eastern Bloc cities with eyes smeared with kohl. "

The album is considered an indie rock classic.
