El Pintor is the fifth studio album by the New York post-punk revival band Interpol . The album was recorded from winter 2013 to summer 2014 in New York's Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village and Atomic Sound Studios in Red Hook and on August 9, 2014 in the United States on Matador Records , internationally one day earlier on the Soft Limit label released. The album name El Pintor (Spanish The Painter ) is an anagram of the band name Interpol .

History and artwork

Interpol on El Pintor tour, Palladium (Cologne), January 2015

After 200 tour concerts after the release of the last album and the departure of bass guitarist Carlos Dengler in 2010, the band needed some time to reorient themselves to get to work on a new album. Guitarist Daniel Kessler devoted himself to his own projects and front man Paul Banks has in the meantime released a solo album and an EP under his synonym Julian Plenti .

Like the previous album Interpol , the band produced El Pintor themselves. The album was recorded and mixed in New York's Electric Lady Studios and Atomic Sound Studios by James Brown and Alan Moulder , who already worked with Nine Inch Nails , The Smashing Pumpkins , U2 , The Killers , The Bravery , Björk or the Foo Fighters . The mastering of the recordings was done by Greg Calbi.

For the front cover of the album - two clapping hands bathed in red light - the band was able to win over David Calderley, who implemented the rather demanding ideas of the band. Calderley used a black and white photograph from the 1930s as a template for the cover, which was supplemented by word marks that were set in a retro font , the sans serif Futura from 1927. The red and black, graphically reduced album cover is very similar to the design of the debut album Turn on the Bright Lights .

As part of the marketing of the album, Interpol worked with street artist Shepard Fairey in late 2014 , who created the album's artwork and a series of signed graphic prints for two graffiti on a house in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (North 7th Street and Driggs Avenue) which were offered in the pre-sale of the album. For the graffito, Fairey used the title of the single Everything is Wrong and based on the name of the album created two anagrams - The very growing sin and Every wrong insight - that complement the murals.

Release and tour

Interpol at Rock am Ring 2015

The band's characteristic understatement includes extraordinary locations for the presentation of their albums. El Pintor was unveiled to the public in the hall of the Egyptian Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on September 2, 2014.

Interpol kicked off the release tour on July 25, 2014 in Byron Bay , Australia . At the beginning of August the band went on a North American tour until the end of 2014. During the tour on November 18-20, the band got stuck in the tour bus for over 50 hours after a snow storm near Buffalo and had to cancel three concerts in Toronto and Boston . In January and February 2015, Interpol's European tour also took them to Cologne and Berlin for two concerts . As a support act accompanied noise rock band Health Interpol on some concerts. Before the band played some open-air concerts and festivals around the world in summer 2015, the second part of the America tour followed in spring 2015.

style

After the last album was musically criticized by Interpol and had lagged behind the success of the first albums commercially , El Pintor's music reverted to tried and tested concepts as a "return to the old form". Many of the songs are characterized by Kessler's carefully constructed guitar riffs and the haunting, mostly melancholy voice of Paul Bank, which was compared to Ian Curtis , especially in the early days of the band , but has long since developed into an independent trademark of the New York band. Compared to earlier works, the melodies are "[o] rchestral, [almost] sacral [...] produced". Individual songs on the album today use elements of hip hop and free jazz . Nevertheless, the entire work is characterized by music critics as "monochrome post-punk".

Single releases

The album's first single All the Rage Back Home was released on August 12, 2014 . The second single Everything Is Wrong , released on November 25, 2014, will be released as a bonus on April 18, 2015, along with the B-side What is What on vinyl . The album cover was designed by Shepard Fairey, who already worked with the band in Brooklyn in autumn 2014. At the end of January 2015, the band announced the third release from the album: On March 9, 2015, the single Anywhere will be released .

Video publications

Before the official record release, Interpol published on July 7, 2014, together with the single All The Rage Back Home, a video compilation on the band's website, which the lead singer Paul Banks had put together with Sophia Peer. On September 17, 2014, the second video of the El Pintor album was released, the Twice As Hard video produced by Paul Banks , which thematically takes up scenes in a boxing studio. The video for the single Everything Is Wrong , released in November 2014, was produced in collaboration with Carlos Puga and Paul Banks and released on January 22, 2015.

Reception and album review

The first album after Carlos Dengler's departure was largely positively received by the record critics . Individual critics see the record as a return to the music of the first years of the band's history, whereby the assessment of it subjectively fluctuates between relief, enthusiasm and lack of imagination.

“In 2014, indie rock is also heading for highs. "El Pintor" presented the retro heads from Interpol in unexpected top form, because the departure of bassist Carlos Dengler made the fans worry lines. Completely unfounded: Live successor David Pajo brings a breath of fresh air, whereas Paul Banks thins the bass on the album. Overall, Interpol are returning to unrestrained joy in playing. Daniel Kessler's itchy guitar playing in particular provides plenty of highlights. British post-punk structures that seem to have long since died are celebrating a dynamically staged resurrection in the hands of the New Yorkers. "

“The sound spectrum has expanded. More orchestral, more sacred, larger produced. Beats like in hip-hop. But after five albums you realize: They are slowly running out of melodies. ... The typical piano doubles have also been heard before. Typical of Interpol, you could call it. But also unimaginative. "

"EL PINTOR is the definitive guitar record of the guitar-against-mighty-soundscape band Interpol, because alongside Daniel Kessler's consistently very concise riffs it is characterized by a tireless, sometimes downright formulation-mad, even eccentric ( Same Town, New Story ) lead guitar as we know from Television's masterpiece Marquee Moon. As if she had to stand by Paul Banks, who is once more vaguely and mysteriously booming of gloomy conditions of loneliness, distress and loss of trust, weeping him, pursuing every dark feeling for a few winged notes. "

"" El Pintor "sounds like Interpol every second, only wears out very slowly, and with Tidal Wave there is also the popular overtong again."
