history

Like all parishes in the area, the parish suffered from conflict in the Middle Ages. The worst devastation was caused by the Hundred Years War and the Thirty Years War . The name of the district Lamarche was originally Has and was first mentioned in a document in 812 under the name Hadina . It was not called La Marche (or Lamarche) until the 18th century and was part of the county of Has-la-Marche . The district of Nonsard was mentioned for the first time in a document as early as 708 under the name novo ex Sarto-villa . In the Middle Ages, today's municipality was in the Barrois non mouvant in the Duchy of Lorraine and first belonged to the Bailliage Thiaucourt, then to the Bailliage Saint-Mihiel. From 1766 until the French Revolution , the community was in the Grand-gouvernement de Lorraine-et-Barrois . Nonsard and Lamarche belonged to the District of Saint-Mihiel from 1793 to 1801. And from 1793 to 1801 they were part of the canton of Heudicourt. From 1801 to 2015 they were in the canton of Vigneulles-lès-Hattonchâtel. Since 1801 they have been assigned to the Arrondissement of Commercy. Between 1972 and 1982, the previously independent municipalities of Heudicourt-sous-les-Côtes, Lamarche-en-Woëvre and Nonsard formed the municipality of Madine . Nonsard and Lamarche-en-Woëvre split off from Heudicourt-sous-les-Côtes and merged to form the new municipality of Nonsard-Lamarche. Both places were largely destroyed during the First World War.

Population development

The population development is typical for a French rural community. The development between 1793 and 1851 is normal with strong growth. Then the rural exodus began in the community. Because of the war, the population fell sharply between 1911 and 1921. Therefore, in November 1918, only 9 of the former 296 inhabitants lived in the two places. Another 200 returned over the next two and a half years. The emigration continued until its low point in 1975. From the high of 1851 to 1975 the decrease was 79.6 percent. There has been strong growth since 2006 (2006–2016: +86 percent).
