history

Like all places in the area, Beney-en-Woëvre suffered from conflicts in the Middle Ages. The worst devastation was caused by the Hundred Years War and the Thirty Years War . The name of the community was first mentioned in a document in 1090 under the Latin name Barneum . In the Middle Ages, today's community was in the Barrois non mouvant in the Duchy of Lorraine and first belonged to the Bailliage Pont-à-Mousson and then to the Bailliage Saint-Mihiel. From 1766 until the French Revolution , the community was in the Grand-gouvernement de Lorraine-et-Barrois . Beney-en-Woëvre belonged to the District of Saint-Mihiel from 1793 to 1801. From 1793 to 2015 it was part of the canton of Vigneulles-lès-Hattonchâtel. Since 1801 the municipality has been assigned to the Arrondissement of Commercy. The place was partially destroyed in the First World War. Until 1942 the community was called Beney - without today's addition.

Population development

The population development is atypical for a French rural community. There was no growth between 1793 and 1841. Then the rural exodus began in the community. Because of the war, the population fell sharply between 1911 and 1921. Therefore, in November 1918, only 3 of the former 208 residents lived in the village. But since, in contrast to other communities, many houses were only slightly damaged, the majority of the former residents returned in the following two and a half years. The population rose by 1962 and almost reached the level of 1911. The ensuing wave of emigration lasted until its low point in 1990. From the high point in 1841 to 1990 the decrease was 71 percent. There was strong growth between 1990 and 2006 (2006–2016: +29.4 percent). In recent years the population has dropped back to 1999 levels.

traffic

The D67 and the D904 meet in the village. Together with the D901 that runs to the west, they are the most important regional transport links for the community, which is far away from motorways.

The municipality is located near the Lérouville – Metz railway line and the LGV Est européenne line crosses the municipality. But since all the stops between Lérouville and Onville and thus also the Thiaucourt stop, the place has been far away from railway connections. Closest train stations are Lérouville and Onville.
