Troyon is a French commune with 263 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Commercy , the canton Saint-Mihiel and the community association Communauté de communes du Sammiellois .

geography

The municipality of Troyon is located on the Meuse , about 50 kilometers west of Metz and halfway between Verdun and Saint-Mihiel on the former Route nationale 64 . The Catholics in Troyon belong to the Diocese of Verdun , a diocese of the Catholic Church in France . The districts of Liseral and Palameix belong to Troyon .

Neighboring municipalities of Troyon are Ranzières in the north, Vaux-lès-Palameix in the northeast, Lacroix-sur-Meuse in the east and southeast, Woimbey in the south, Bouquemont in the southwest, Tilly-sur-Meuse in the west and Ambly-sur-Meuse in the northwest.

history

During the First World War , thousands of soldiers died in combat or in hospitals in the Troyon area . In September 1914 fighting troops of the German Army , the Maas heights to take and to at St. Mihiel west to capture a bridgehead of the Meuse. On September 8, organizations began the 5th Army , the Fort de Troyon to fire grenades. The fort, part of the Barrière de fer , was the only serious obstacle on the way downriver to Verdun. On September 13th, they stopped the fire with no results.

Soon the front froze, as it did on other sections of the western front . A trench warfare was waged until 1918 . During the Battle of Verdun (February to December 1916) there were numerous German troops in the area around Verdun, including in and around Troyon, but they did not get beyond Fort Troyon . Troops of the American Expeditionary Forces with French units attacked the Battle of St. Mihiel from September 12 to 15, forcing the German troops to abandon the front arch (' la poche de Saint-Mihiel ) there. This ended the German occupation of this area.

Troyon Vaux les Palameix military cemetery

There is a German military cemetery between the districts of Liseral and Palameix . 5590 soldiers who fought and died on the German side in the First World War are buried there.
