Neuville-lès-Vaucouleurs is located around 39 kilometers southwest of Nancy in the south of the Meuse department. The place is on the Canal de la Haute Meuse west of the Meuse , which in parts forms the eastern municipal boundary. In contrast to many municipalities in the region, only small parts of the municipality are forested (Bois de Neuville). The commune consists of the village of Neuville-lès-Vaucouleurs and a few farms.
Neighboring communities are Vaucouleurs in the north, Chalaines in the northeast, Sepvigny in the east and southeast, Burey-en-Vaux in the south and Montigny-lès-Vaucouleurs in the west.
history
Like all parishes in the area, the parish suffered from conflict in the Middle Ages. The worst devastation was caused by the Hundred Years War and the Thirty Years War . The name of today's municipality was first mentioned in a document in 1011 under the Latin name Nova-villa . In the Middle Ages Neuville-lès-Vaucouleurs was within the Champagne region and belonged to the Bailliage Chaumont. From 1766 until the French Revolution , the community was in the Grand-gouvernement de Lorraine-et-Barrois . Neuville-lès-Vaucouleurs belonged to the Gondrecourt district from 1793 to 1801. Also since 1793 to the canton of Vaucouleurs. The parish has been assigned to the Arrondissement of Commercy since 1801.
Population development
The parish shares the fate of many rural parishes in France. When the rural exodus began in 1870, it began later than in other places in the region. From the high in 1851 to the low in 1999, the number of residents decreased by 70.9 percent. In the last few decades the population has grown again sharply (1999–2016: +22.1 percent).
