Woimbey is a French commune with 122 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Commercy and the Aire à l'Argonne municipality .

geography

Woimbey is located on the Meuse , about 23 kilometers south of Verdun . Woimbey is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Troyon in the north, Lacroix-sur-Meuse in the east, Bannoncourt in the south-east, Lahaymeix and Thillombois in the south-west and Bouquemont in the north-west.

The place name developed from Wimbeia (first mentioned in 973) via Wimbea (984), Imberes (1047), Imbeia (1049), Vuembeye (1180), Wymbée (1228), Wimbée (1280), Winbeii-castrum (1580), Vuymbey (1585), Wimbey (1587), Wimbeyum (1642), Wimbays (1656), Wambasius (1717), Wimbæum (1738), Wimbais or Wambais (1745), Weymbey, Weimbey or Wimbay (1756) to this day common woimbey (since 1793).
