Levoncourt is a French commune with 57 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region (before 2016 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Commercy and the canton Dieue-sur-Meuse (until 2015 the canton Pierrefitte-sur-Aire ). The residents call themselves Levoncourtois / Levoncourtoises .

geography

The municipality is located about 15 kilometers northeast of Bar-le-Duc in the center of the Meuse department on the Ruisseau de Lavallée . The municipality consists only of the place Levoncourt. Neighboring municipalities are Gimécourt in the north and northeast, Baudrémont in the northeast and east, Lignières-sur-Aire in the east and southeast, Lavallée in the south, Érize-Saint-Dizier , Rumont and Érize-la-Brûlée in the west and Villotte-sur-Aire in the Northwest and north.

history

The name of the present-day parish was first mentioned in a document in 1135 under the Latin name Levonis-curtis . In the Middle Ages the community belonged to the Duchy of Bar and then to the Duchy of Lorraine . More precisely to the Amt ( Bailliage ) Bar. With this rule Levoncourt fell to France in 1766. Until the French Revolution , the community was in the Grand-gouvernement de Lorraine-et-Barrois . From 1793 to 1801 the parish was assigned to the Commercy district and part of the canton of Dagonville. And from 1801 to 2015 part of the canton of Pierrefitte-sur-Aire. Levoncourt has been part of the Arrondissement Commercy since 1801.
