Gartrop-Bühl's dugout canoe in the Museum of German Inland Shipping

The originally 17.0 m long dugout canoe from Gartrop-Bühl , northeast of Hünxe , was recovered from the Lip dike in 1950 . It has now shrunk and is only about 15.0 meters long. It is the largest historical dugout canoe found in Europe so far.

In 2008, as part of its presentation at the Museum of German Inland Shipping in Duisburg- Ruhrort, a dendrochronological study was carried out. The oak dugout can therefore be dated to the first half of the 4th century BC. Its shape features raise questions about its function. In view of the special features, a function as a floating body for a Lippe ferry can be assumed.

Around 60 dugout canoe finds are known from North Rhine-Westphalia . Dugouts served a variety of purposes, such as fishing or the transport of people and cargo.
