Lacroix-sur-Meuse is a French commune with 720 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ); it belongs to the Arrondissement Commercy and to the community association Communauté de communes du Sammiellois . The residents call themselves Lacruxiens / Lacruxiennes .
geography
Lacroix-sur-Meuse is located around 51 kilometers southwest of the city of Metz in the center of the Meuse department. In terms of traffic, the community is far away from the motorways on the D964. The place is located on the Ruisseau des Ormes stream east of the Canal de la Meuse . The Meuse partially forms the western border of the municipality, which is extensively forested.
history
Finds from the Iron Age prove an early settlement. Other finds from the Gallo-Roman and Frankish times are evidence of permanent settlement since the early days.
Lacroix-sur-Meuse belonged to the Bailliage de Saint-Mihiel within the Barrois in the Middle Ages and modern times and had administrators from various noble families. In 1792 the castle was destroyed.
Lacroix-sur-Meuse belonged to the District of Saint Mihiel from 1793 to 1801. It was also the capital of the Lacroix canton from 1793 to 1801 and has belonged to the Saint-Mihiel canton since 1801. The parish has been assigned to the Arrondissement of Commercy since 1801.
During the First World War, the place was largely destroyed by acts of war.
