Saint-Maurice-sous-les-Côtes is a French commune with 352 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region ; it belongs to the Arrondissement Commercy and the municipality association Côtes de Meuse Woëvre .
geography
Saint-Maurice-sous-les-Côtes is located around 38 kilometers west-southwest of the city of Metz in the east of the Meuse department. The community consists of the towns of Saint-Maurice-sous-les-Côtes and Bassaucourt. Large parts of the community are forested. In terms of traffic, it is far away from the motorways on the D908.
history
During the First World War, the community was partially destroyed by acts of war. In the hamlet of Sainte-Geneviève is a German military cemetery with almost 1,800 graves.
Both places belonged to the District of Saint Mihiel from 1793 to 1801. They were also part of the canton of Vigneulles-lès-Hattonchâtel from 1801 to 2015 . Both districts have been assigned to the Arrondissement of Commercy since 1801. In 1856, the previously independent community of Bassancourt (now Bassaucourt; 1846: 58 inhabitants) was incorporated.
