Rise Like a Phoenix is a song by the writing team Julian Maas , Charlie Mason , Joey Patulka and Alexander “Ali” Zuckowski in English . The song title refers to the motif of the " phoenix from the ashes " known from mythology . In the interpretation of Conchita Wurst , Austria won the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 with the piece .

history

The song was written by the team of authors four years earlier for another project and offered to the Austrian ESC committee upon request. The music was played by the Hungarian Philharmonic Budapest . All of Austria's major record labels refused to publish the song, so the ORF put the song on itself on March 18, 2014. The piece was then selected by ORF-Enterprise as the Austrian contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen without a preliminary decision show .

Lyrics

Tom Neuwirth describes his youth as a homosexual in the country as difficult. Alexander Zuckowski: “At that time we saw [the song] as an invitation to get up again and not give up when there was a headwind. But of course we think it's great that the text has now got a completely different dimension through Conchita's special story ”.

When performing after the award ceremony, Conchita Wurst changed the last verse and the last refrain from “I” to “We”: “We rise up to the sky / You threw '[u] s down but / We gonna fly […] Once we are transformed / Once we are reborn [...] "

reception

“The song has the sound of one of the best James Bond songs. The powerful ballad is glamorous and elegant and is interpreted as convincingly as Shirley Bassey once sang her Goldfinger , ”wrote Thomas Borgmann from Swiss CR magazine. According to the Hamburger Abendblatt , in the interpretation of Conchita Wurst, many viewers perceive the song as a liberation hymn, an open advocacy of tolerance and freedom . Austria's only Eurovision Song Contest winner so far, Udo Jürgens , who was successful with Merci, Chérie in 1966 , praised the song as "a well-composed song with a beautiful musical arc".

In 2020, Rise like a Phoenix was voted 10th of the “100 most important Austrian pop songs” by the pop culture magazine The Gap as part of the AustroTOP ranking.
