Seitenblicke is an ORF television format created under the general management of Thaddäus Podgorski , which has been broadcast on ORF 2 since September 28, 1987 . Every day, five minutes of broadcasting time report on the Austrian social life of the Adabeis , the Schickeria and the “Society-Lions”. Shooting takes place not only at various smaller (for example, celebrity birthday parties and society events in the “Marchfelderhof”), but also at larger events, including major events, as well as, if there is a connection to Austria, from abroad (for example from Oscar night ): “ Be it a charity gala, a premiere or a festive opening - there is hardly a social event at which the 'Seitenblicke' teams are not in the middle of the turmoil. "

Timeline and variants

Is broadcast page views every day at 20:05 as a 5-minute broadcast on ORF 2, between the commercial breaks after the time in the picture (ZIB 1) and the subsequent weather and just before prime time at 20:15. In addition to the regular program, there is also the weekly review Seitenblicke Weekend, broadcast on the Saturday after the midday ZIB (approx. 20 minutes) as well as special editions such as Seitenblicke-Spezial and Seitenblicke-Gourmet. In 2018 there was a special edition Seitenblicke Sommerbühne about the Austrian summer stages, which was broadcast every Friday at 9:50 p.m. in front of ZIB 2.

The signation melody is based on the song Make me a Memory by Grover Washington, Jr. Although the show changed its visual appearance several times in the course of its existence, “the sideways eye in the signature and the 'sparkling wine' melody [were] unmistakable trademarks of ORF. "

Editing, management and reach

Ines Schwandner has been the chief editor of Seitenblicke since 2018. The editors include Christian Reichhold, Robert Reumann (ret.), Karin Schiller, Sabine Spögler-Dinse, Alice Rath-Mayer, Alex Hesse, Walter Kienreich ( ret. ) , Peter Koköfer, Marion Benda, Verena Pawel, Stefanie Zupan, Martin Pusch, Jessica Schwarz (as of 2017).

Erwin Fischer was responsible for the program until he retired in February 1999 . In 2007 Alexander Hofer , who became channel manager of ORF 2 in 2018 and succeeded Edgar Böhm as TV entertainment director on an interim basis, took over the management of the editorial team.

Shipment data

Between the first broadcast in September 1987 and the 25th anniversary of the program in October 2012, around 29,000 contributions were broadcast and 79,403 people were interviewed. At this point in time, a stable number of around 700,000 viewers was noted.

For the 20th anniversary of the broadcast in October 2007, it was shown that the Seitenblicke editorial team received more than 100 invitations per week, of which only three to five events per evening could be attended by the "Seitenblickers". Until then, 36,100 minutes of broadcasting had been designed for 6,359 issues, which would correspond to a full 25 days of broadcasting time. A total of 77,397 people were interviewed, from which 24,147 articles were produced.

From the start in 1987 to 1997, the Seitenblicke von Otto Pammer and his Pammer-Film were produced on behalf of ORF . Since 1997, the Viennese Interspot Film Gesellschaft mbH has produced Rudolf “Purzl Klingohr” and his son Nils Klingohr.

Protagonists and Top 10

The first protagonists interviewed for the Seitenblicke when the format first went on air on September 28, 1987 were the TV commissioner Michele Placido ( Alone Against the Mafia ) and Alfred “Django” Rupf, Colonel of the Police and long-time director the criminal police at Vienna-Schwechat airport , which has become legendary as a "gangster hunter" in Austria.

As Robert Reumann, long-serving editor at the ORF Seitenblick, remarked in October 2007, the only Austrian celebrity "who never showed up in the Seitenblicke" was the author and Nobel Prize winner for literature, Elfriede Jelinek .

For Christina Lugner, on the other hand, cited as an example, who wants to get involved on the society floor even without her ex-husband Richard Lugner , "Life [...] would be less worth living if the 'sideways glances' no longer existed." Because "eventually it would you certainly don't know them in Austria without the 'sideways glances'. And that would be a shame. '"

Quote

“'It was terrible,' says Lisbeth Bischoff , Seitenblicke editor for the first few weeks. 'Because most of them didn't want to give us interviews. It was said that one cannot be watched through the keyhole. People turned up their noses at us. ' The reactions were horrific, says colleague Karl Hohenlohe . 'Destructive. Stop immediately! '

[...]

A typical Austrian paradox soon emerged: 'Nobody watched it, but soon we were among a million viewers for the first time', recalls today's ORF nobility specialist Lisbeth Bischoff in an amused conversation with the ' press '. In a very short time, the skepticism of the protagonists observed turned to the other extreme: 'You stood in line, we were called and couldn't save ourselves from invitations.' If you didn't appear, you were sometimes a little angry; one or the other is said not to have spoken to the ignorant editor for a year. The first positive media criticism, by the way, recalls [Robert] Reumann, in the 'Presse': This is how you imagine a social program. "

Sideways glance society

With reference to the people who "often and happily" appear in the program Seitenblicke , the Seitenblicke Gesellschaft became a fixed term for the media-present social class in Austria and found its way into everyday linguistic usage. The first use is attributed to Erhard Busek , the former ÖVP politician and Vice Chancellor and later President of Forum Alpbach :

“The fact that the ÖVP government is also increasingly relying on productions and events, [...] sees Busek with understanding: 'Unfortunately, we live in the Seitenblicke society. The Adabei pages are the decisive ones and the ÖVP takes this into account. '"

- Erhard Busek : In: APA / Der Standard, 2007

As a keyword, the Seitenblickegesellschaft was included in the Austrian dictionary (ÖWB) as well as in the Duden in 2009 :

  • "Seitenblickegesellschaft: People who often and happily appear in the TV magazine 'Seitenblicke'." (ÖWB)
  • "Seitenblickegesellschaft, die: ( Austrian for media-present social class)". (Duden)
  • "Sideways glance society that: -‹ after the title of an ORF broadcast ›: members of a social class who are often present at social events and therefore have a high media presence." (Duden: How do you say in Austria?)
