The Makemakes are an Austrian rock music - group , consisting of the Thalgau singer Dominic "Dodo" Muhrer and from Mondsee coming musicians Florian Meindl and Mark Christian. The name is derived from the dwarf planet Makemake , which in turn was named after the creator deity Makemake in the culture of Easter Island .

history

The band gained fame in 2013 through their appearance as the opening act for Bon Jovi . The rumor, often quoted in the relevant press, that the singer of the group Dodo Muhrer could be an illegitimate son of the actor Christoph Waltz also contributed to the popularity of the band.

At the Austrian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 , you were chosen as a candidate for Austria . Plagiarism allegations were made against their song I Am Yours , which was said to be similar to the song The Scientist by the British band Coldplay . An official examination concluded that there was no plagiarism.

Their participation in the Eurovision Song Contest, which took place in Vienna on May 23, 2015, was unsuccessful - they scored zero points. They landed on the penultimate place out of 27 participating countries, since the singer Ann Sophie , who was also participating for Germany, also came after them with zero points and was therefore ranked behind them according to the rules for equality of points. In reference to the successful Swedish winning title, The Makemakes published a satirical video on Facebook on the night of the Song Contest entitled "We are the Zeroes of our Time", which was viewed more than half a million times in a few days and by the Media was interpreted as a dignified gesture. Based on The Makemakes, Ann Sophie published her version of the Austrian parody the following day.

For the new edition of the title "Climb Every Mountain" from the musical " The Sound Of Music ", the US producer Humberto Gatica engaged The Makemakes as a duet partner for the two-time American Idol finalist Joshua Ledet .

In 2017 they shot the ServusTV feature film documentary The Makemakes in Hollywood - In the footsteps of The Sound of Music , Verena Altenberger acted as narrator .

In March 2018 The Makemakes released their official comeback single "Keep On Moving" in Austria. Musically, according to their own statements, they referred to their original roots.

In December, The Makemakes participated in the production of the third episode of the first season of My Hit Your Song on ProSieben . With their rock arrangements of the songs Love Is All Around and Freedom by DJ BoBo they prevailed against the competition and win 25,000 euros in prize money. After the broadcast on January 31, 2019, the German audience reacted positively to the band, which was hardly known in Germany up to that point.
