Jimmy Makulis (* April 12, 1935 as Demetrius Macoulis , Greek : Τζίμης Μακούλης, in Athens ; † October 28, 2007 ibid) was a Greek pop singer who also enjoyed great success in the German-speaking countries in the 1950s and 1960s.
Life
Makulis grew up in South Africa and attended high school and college in Johannesburg and Cape Town. His father and grandfather were diplomats; the father had served as the Greek consul in Cyprus and as a labor attaché in the British embassy in Athens. Jimmy sang in bars and nightclubs in the evenings and won a singing competition in Athens in 1949, which soon made him a successful singer in his home country. He signed his first record deal with Philips in Greece .
In 1955 Makulis came to Germany, where he initially recorded two singles with Polydor . His first big success in German-speaking countries was in 1956 with the song Auf Cuba die Mädchen sind braun , which was produced by the Heliodor label . The greatest success came in 1959 with the first Ariola production Guitars sound quietly through the night , a cover version of the hit by GDR singer Günter Geißler . Makulis' version is one of the evergreens of German hit music today . Because of his perfect appearance and appearance, the media called him the "Sinatra of the Orient". At that time he lived in Munich. He was also successful in a duet, first with Lolita as Ditta Zusa (1957) and later with Nina Zacha (1961/62).
In 1959 Makulis played girls for the Mambo-Bar in the revue thriller at the side of Kai Fischer and Gerlinde Locker , in 1961 Makulis appeared in the feature film On the Streets of a City under the direction of Otto Ambros , which was followed by other film roles until 1966 followed. In 1961 he also represented Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest . His song Sehnsucht took 15th place there, tied last. In 1962 Makulis took part in the German Schlager Festival in 1962 . His song I only got you in life came in last. Nevertheless, the title was able to stay in the German charts for twelve weeks.
In 1966 Makulis moved to the USA , where he achieved some notable success in Las Vegas . His repertoire now comprised ten languages. In 1985 Jimmy Makulis returned to his native Greece. There he took part in the Greek qualification for the song contest in 1990, but could not qualify. In the early 1990s he returned to Germany, where he was able to achieve a few smaller successes. In 2005 a music agency contacted a German label. He made his last studio recordings together with the music producer Horst Lemke. His last published CD I Don`t Think I Ever Told You with three of his greatest German hits a. a. "Guitars sound quietly through the night" and two English-language titles were released in 2006 by Marabu Records.
Makulis, who was married to Monika from Berlin, died on October 28, 2007 at the age of 72 in a hospital in Athens after undergoing heart surgery.
