King of Mask Singer (in the original Mystery Eumakshow Bongmyeongawang ) is a music show on the South Korean TV broadcaster MBC , moderated by Kim Sung-joo . The format developed successfully internationally and was licensed in several other countries, including Germany as The Masked Singer .

format

The broadcast is a singing competition. Two singers always compete against each other in three rounds. They wear masks to hide their identity. This is to prevent viewers from being influenced by factors such as popularity, career and age. The masks are designed by Hwang Jae-geun. In the first round, the competitors sing a song together. In the second and third round, however, they sing alone. The winners are chosen by the audience and a jury. The evaluation takes place immediately. The participants wear the masks until they lose an encounter. Then they are unmasked. The respective winner of the encounter then challenges the previous winner. If the challenger wins, he becomes the new Mask King . Ha Hyun-woo from the band Guckkasten has won nine times in a row, more often than anyone else. The singer Son Seung-yeon won eight times in a row.

Members of bands, ballad singers and K-pop idols took part in the series, while well-known comedians were also represented in the jury.
