You Know My Name is the theme song for the 21st official James Bond film Casino Royale , sung by Chris Cornell , front man of the alternative rock groups Soundgarden and Audioslave . It was written and composed by Chris Cornell in collaboration with David Arnold , the composer of the score for Casino Royale .

The song

Musically, this song is one of the most aggressive theme songs in the film series - in adaptation to the complete reorientation of the films with Casino Royale - and is often compared to Live and Let Die by Paul McCartney and the Wings - also by Cornell himself. When working with Arnold he tried to avoid anything typical of Bond. Nevertheless, the song should ultimately embody the "essence" of it.

The structure of the song itself is strongly reminiscent of the beginning On Her Majesty's Secret Service : there, too, a hard, staccato-like instrumental use is followed by a calmer passage, whereupon the song intensifies until the end. The title song of the film On Her Majesty's Secret Service was the first in which the composer was unable to incorporate the film title into the lyrics. An instrumental piece was then written.

The text mainly describes the difficulties a classic secret agent is confronted with, such as betrayal ("The odds will betray you") or necessary coldness ("Forget how to feel"), but also contains allusions to gambling - a central element in the Movie. A turning wheel (“Life is gone with just a spin of the wheel”) is used as a metaphor or a hidden hand (“Try to hide your hand”) is mentioned.

Music video

The music video premiered on October 31, 2006 in MTV's Making the Video . It consists of sequences with Cornell, who accompanies the song on an acoustic guitar in front of a spotlight wall, various scenes from Casino Royale , some of which were previously unpublished, together with a plot about Cornell: he checks into an airplane and discovers a woman. He has to fight his excitement on the plane. Next up is him in a car with this woman. He comes to a hotel with company, where he finally finds her standing in front of a window. These sequences are linked to the Casino Royale scenes in such a way that it seems that Bond is always around. So Cornell sees the launching aircraft out of the window and discovers Bond over the roofs rennend (from the chase in Madagascar ). Parallel to the car scenes with Cornell, Bond can be seen in his Aston Martin DBS following the kidnappers Vesper Lynds and losing control of the car.

The video was made while filming under the direction of Michael Hausmann on October 10th and 11th in Los Angeles . The version used is the Pop Mix published here for the first time .

Use in film

You Know My Name is played in the background of the computer-animated opening credits , which was created for the fifth time in Bond history by Daniel Kleinman . Computer-animated figures fight in front of playing card ornaments, among whom James Bond can always be recognized by his black tuxedo. The pieces he defeated disintegrate into playing cards.

On the basis of the script, Kleinman first developed visual ideas. In consultation with the director, Kleinman refrained from dancing women and instead emphasized the game of chance that is also associated with Bond - it also forms the original cover motif of the novel . He shot some fight scenes and footage of Craig with a separate team to adequately introduce him in his first film. Since he had the title song - and especially the text - available early on, he was able to align the opening credits with it. Most of the time, digital effects were used, the actual texts came right at the end.

background

In the run-up, there were many assumptions about the theme song. Thus, among others, Tony Christie , Robbie Williams , U2 and Tina Turner , which already for the Bond film Goldeneye the theme song of the same name has been contributed, touted as potential performers. The rumor about the British band Goldfrapp , which was received by a large number of media, persisted in particular . Shortly thereafter, David Arnold , the film's composer , denied this . He also announced that the artist who had already been selected would be announced soon.

On July 20, 2006, Chris Cornell confirmed his participation in the Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat . Shortly afterwards, on July 26th, the title You Know My Name and the compositional collaboration of David Arnold were announced in an official announcement .

Since The Living Daylights by a-ha, it is the first title track in a James Bond film that is interpreted by a male singer, and with All Time High by Rita Coolidge from the film Octopussy it is only the second that lyrically has no references to the Has film title.

Release and versions

On September 20, 2006, two months after Cornell's confirmation, a trailer was released in which the first excerpts could be heard. Meanwhile an mp3 file of the complete song was already circulating on the Internet. On the single she is represented as the main version . Another version with a larger orchestra was used for the music video. This version could be heard shortly before on Chris Cornell's official Myspace profile. It is the one primarily played on the radio and is referred to as the Pop Mix on the single . It is Cornell's preferred.

The version finally used in the film is a different one: Here the focus is clearly on Bond -type brass , which replace a large part of the guitars (especially in the intro played entirely by horns ). Due to the length of the opening credits, it is around a minute shorter. This variant is played again in a shortened version in the credits.

A fourth version with a slightly detoxified instrumentation without strings and with far fewer brass instruments can be heard in Casino Royale's official MySpace . All versions also differ in intonation. In the pop mix, " I've seen this diamond " is sung, while all others contain " I've seen diamonds ".

On November 13, 2006, the main version was initially made available in the iTunes Store . You Know My Name was released as a single in Germany on December 1, 2006 , but not until December 11 , 2006 in Great Britain and December 14, 2006 in the USA . In Germany, Austria and Switzerland the song reached the top 20, in Great Britain it moved up up to number seven on the charts .

As the first in Bond film history, this song is not included on the official soundtrack CD. However, it can be heard on Cornell's second solo album, Carry On , which was released in June 2007. This was done at the request of Cornell himself, since he claims the song for himself.
