The song is part of a soundtrack for the film Trolls , which was released on September 23, 2016. Justin Timberlake acted as the producer of this soundtrack, also sang some of the songs and was also responsible for the lyrics of three of the songs, including Can't Stop the Feeling! On May 6, 2016, the song sung by Timberlake was pre-released. This is the first single Timberlake had released in more than two years after the song Not a Bad Thing was last released in 2014 , which was taken from the album The 20/20 Experience - 2 of 2 . After that, the singer announced that he wanted to spend more time with his wife and family planning, and finally Silas Randall, Timberlake and Jessica Biel's first son, was born in April 2015. According to his own statements, Timberlake had received a lot of inspiration for new songs while recording the album and later announced that he was already working on a new album.

Timberlake had the song Can't Stop the Feeling! Performed live for the first time one week after the pre-release at a performance as part of the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 . Timberlake was traveling around Europe for the screening of the film Trolls at the time.

The song was number one on the downloads charts for six weeks, making it the longest of Timberlake's previous singles there, with the song also catching up with 2006's SexyBack . The song also set a record for music played on the radio, being the most listened to song for three weeks and Timberlake's most played song for a week. The song also stayed in the US pop charts for several weeks. The song landed at number 10 in Germany and at number 9 in the US singles charts of 2016 . In addition, the single was at the top of the German airplay charts for eight weeks , longer than any other in the 2016 calendar year. At the end of the year, Can't Stop the Feeling! second place in the airplay annual charts.

The song was awarded platinum in Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, New Zealand, Poland and the United Kingdom , in Germany with three times gold , in Spain with two times platinum , in Australia, Italy and the USA three times , in Canada four times , and in Sweden even with five platinum records . In France, the song was awarded a diamond for more than 400,000 singles sold .
