The 20/20 Experience - 2 of 2 is the fourth studio album by the American singer Justin Timberlake . It was released on September 27, 2013 on RCA Records as the last part of a two-part project. The previous album The 20/20 Experience was released on March 15, 2013 .

Emergence

After the commercially successful album FutureSex / LoveSounds , it took seven years for Timberlake to present the successor with The 20/20 Experience . In the meantime he worked as an actor and contributed to some songs by other artists such as Madonna, Rihanna or TI Features.

In 2010 Timberlake started talking to his manager Johnny Wright about a new album. At first Timberlake did not want to return to music and continue to concentrate on his film career, but in June 2012 he had worked out so many new songs with Timbaland that they decided on two albums. The recordings took place in just four weeks at Larrabee Studios ( Hollywood ), Timberlake was pressed for time because of the planned shooting of scenes for Runner, Runner . For some songs like Take Back the Night or Amnesia , Timberlake worked with the Benjamin Wright Orchestra , which recorded some string and wind parts for the album. The first album was completed in July 2012 and was finally released in March 2013.

The manager Wright said of Timberlake's cooperation with Timbaland: "when those two come together there's a lot of magic that happens." ("When these two work together, magical things happen.")

The rapper Jay-Z has a guest part in Murder - he was already on the first album in Suit and Tie as the only guest singer on the entire album. In addition, this time with Drake , another guest musician took part on the album.

Promotion and publication

In March, producer Questlove announced that Timberlake was planning to release a second 20/20 Experience album. J-Roc Harmon, the co-producer of the album, also commented in this direction. On May 5th, Timberlake announced the release of a follow-up album for the end of September at the same time as the announcement that he would go on The 20/20 Experience World Tour beginning on October 31st .

Furthermore, his numerous appearances in television shows or live events, where he presented songs from the first album, served as a promotion for The 20/20 Experience - 2 of 2 .

On July 12th, the song Take Back the Night was released as a pre-release single . A week before the album was released, TKO was released as the second single.

The second album of the 20/20 Experience received a more mixed reception than the first, which was largely praised by the media. As part of The 20/20 Experience: The Complete Experience , it was nominated for the Grammy Awards 2014 in the category "Best Pop Singing Album".

Sven Kabelitz from the E-Zine Laut compares the album with a "cold pizza half" and awards one less than the previous one with only 2 out of 5 points.

" A simple use of leftovers from the same old recording sessions [...] With the familiar ingredients," 2 of 2 "really gets going. The omnipresent elegance on "1 of 2" gives way to brutal hard-heartedness. In the first tracks the beats rumble tremendously. But the first signs of fatigue quickly set in. [...] Once again Timberlake celebrates gigantism and megalomania. Where he freshened up long tracks with unexpected twists and turns and interesting ideas on the predecessor, he now gets lost somewhere in nowhere. Only length and sound count. It is not uncommon for the actual songs to get lost. [...] With decidedly more focus, instead of two satisfying to disappointing albums, we would have a single exquisite R'n'B long player in front of us. "

For Vincent Grundke from the streaming platform Ampya, on the other hand, Timberlake is building a monument for himself with the album and completes the epic he began with The 20/20 Experience .

“The essence is always this jungle-like beat, which harbors such diverse forms and individualities that the wildest butterflies and monkeys whiz past the amazed head pictorially in the inner eye. Here and there there is a rustling, there are clay colors. Couples dance in love with sound symbioses, so to speak. Lively old school disco dance moves included - Justin Timberlake caters to your every need. "Take Back The Night" explains how this works. Because here you can clearly feel the spirit of the King of Pop Michael Jackson, who gives the layered salad sound its wings again. "

Commercial win

In the US, The 20/20 Experience - 2 of 2 became Timberlake's third number one album after FutureSex / LoveSounds and The 20/20 Experience . In Great Britain, on the other hand, it missed the top of the chart and was only able to place itself in second place. It did not rise to the chart throne in the German-speaking countries either. The 20/20 Experience made it to number 1 in Germany and Switzerland.

In the USA it has been sold 681,000 times so far - including The 20/20 Experience: The Complete Experience (as of December 2013).
