Lemon Tree is a pop song by the German band Fools Garden . It was the first single from their studio album Dish of the Day and reached number one in the singles charts in Germany and Austria , among others .

background

Peter Freudenthaler told MDR TV in 2015 that he wrote the song on a Sunday afternoon in the bedroom while waiting for his girlfriend within twenty minutes. He chose the word lemon tree because it sounds good. He hoped that no students would have to interpret the song in class. In September 1995 the band had a gig in the pub The Leprechaun at the train station in Hagsfeld , among the audience was the radio presenter Matthias Matuschik, a friend of his . During the subsequent beer drinking in Karlsruhe city center, the band members told Matuschik about the Lemon Tree that had just been recorded in the studio and hummed the chorus. The radio host decided to play the song on his SWF 3 show, and hundreds of people called the newsroom to find out who had just sung that song. Then the song was put into rotation . After a few requests to buy the single, Intercord offered the band a record deal. This was signed in November 1995.

Cover versions

Lemon Tree was covered in 2009 by Ina Müller with Low German lyrics ( Dorp Reggae ). Jan Böhmermann reworked the song for the hymn to the 1990s in Neo Magazin Royale with German lyrics . The video with the title A Hymn to the 90s , which was elaborately produced in 2014 with many guest stars , became a hit on the internet with YouTube clicks in the millions. In 2016 there was also a live version that ended in a performance of the original by Fools Garden, after the German text had previously read "and the most beautiful melody / was that of Lemon Tree " as a modification of the original Böhmermann version .

There are other cover versions and arrangements by international artists, but they are less well known in German-speaking countries. They also include the parody Christmas Tree of Dustin the Turkey and Tracy Sus versions in Mandarin and Cantonese.

The 2015 album Flashback by Fools Garden, on which the original interpreters themselves cover hits from the 1990s, also opens with a musically completely redesigned version of their own hit Lemon Tree , titled as a 2.0 version. In 2020 Tom Beck interpreted the piece in the program The Masked Singer ; He performed the first stanza in reggae style, the rest as rock and roll in the style of Elvis Presley .
