biography

Delahanty was born to the Irish immigrants James (1842-1919) and Bridget Delahanty (1849-1926, nee Croke). At the age of 21 he began his professional career in the minor leagues with the Fall River Indians. He only played 24 games for the Indians but came in at a batting average of .344. That same year he left the Indians to join the Newport Colts and then the Wheeling Nailers. In 1898 and 1899 he played alongside his brothers Jim and Tom in the Allentown Peanuts. Delahanty had to sit out 37 games due to injury in 1898, but still played 85 times for the Peanuts and achieved a batting average of .311. A year later he was named the Peanuts Most Valuable Player . Until his commitment in 1907 by the St. Louis Cardinals , he played for various minor league teams. He made his MLB debut on September 30, 1907 in the jersey of the St. Louis Cardinals, for which he could only make seven games that season. Still, he convinced offensively and hit a home run , stole three bases and had a batting average of .311. The following year, the Cardinals recorded only 43 wins and 111 losses, of which Delahanty was involved in 140 games. In 1909 he made 123 games for St. Louis, but only achieved a batting average of. 214. This season should also be his last in the MLB, because he made his last game for the Cardinals on October 6 of that year. Delahanty then played for various minor league teams until 1910.

After his active career, he worked in a police office. Delahanty died on January 29, 1936 at the age of 60 in Cleveland .
