Thomas James "Tom" Delahanty (born March 9, 1872 in Cleveland , Ohio , † January 10, 1951 in Sanford , Florida ) was an American baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB) on the position of infielders .

His brothers Ed , Frank , Jim and Joe also played in the MLB.

biography

Delahanty was born to the Irish immigrants James (1842-1919) and Bridget Delahanty (1849-1926, nee Croke). Due to a hand injury of second baseman Bill Hallman , Delahanty was called up by the Philadelphia Phillies on September 29, 1894 in the MLB and so it came about that he made his MLB debut at the age of 22, on the last day of the season for the Phillies 1894, celebrated. In 1895 he played for two teams in the minor league , before he returned to his hometown in 1896 and made 16 MLB games for the Cleveland Spiders . However, he could not convince with his poor defensive performance and was dismissed after 16 games. In the same year, Delahanty moved to the Pittsburgh Pirates for whom he ran up once. In 1897 he played for a total of four clubs. One of them were the Louisville Colonels for whom he played a single and at the same time his last game in the MLB on June 29, 1897. After his career in MLB, he played for several clubs in the minor league until 1906, including the Allentown Peanuts, where he played alongside his brothers Jim and Joe in 1898 and 1899 .

In the late 1920s, Delahanty moved to Sanford, Florida, where he ran his own general store and arranged fishing trips for customers. Delahanty died on January 10, 1951 at the age of 78.
