The Festivali i Këngës is a music festival in Albania . It has been played on the Albanian TV channel TVSH since 1962 . The festival is very popular in Albania. It takes place every year in December. Since 2003 it has acted as the Albanian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest .
event
The singing competition takes place at the end of December and is broadcast live on Albanian television. The format of the event changed again and again.
In recent years the Festivali i Këngës has taken place on three consecutive evenings. In 2018, all singers on the first two evenings competed in the final on the third evening, but they serve as a pre-selection and only the best make it to the final. In 2016, the number of participants was reduced by a fifth to 24. A jury determines the winner in each case.
In addition to the participants, other singers appear outside the competition - mostly winners from previous years.
The singing lectures are accompanied by the RTSH television orchestra in the hall.
history
After the first edition in December 1962, the festival quickly established itself as an important competition for singers in Albania. At the XI. Festivali i Këngës in December 1972, western music was played for the first time, and young women were seen in mini skirts . The departure from the festival, which was previously characterized by socialist realism , led to criticism within the leadership of the PPSh. At the 4th plenum of the PPSh Central Committee, which took place from June 26 to June 28, 1973, Todi Lubonja , General Director of RTVSh, and Fadil Paçrami , who was jointly responsible for the implementation of the festival, were severely criticized and both were undermined accused of real socialist party discipline and corruption of the youth. They lost all their offices and were later imprisoned as enemies of the people for many years. As a result of this interference by the highest government under Enver Hoxha , more political and folk songs were performed.
The Festivali i Këngës continued even after the collapse of the one-party system. From 1999, however, it got competition from new music shows from private television stations. From this time, the jury was under increasing criticism: She was venality accused and that the top spots in advance were forgiven. These allegations increased for some time after the 2003 festival became the Albanian preliminary decision of the Eurovision Song Contest .
