Rona Sheref Nishliu (born August 25, 1986 in Kosovska Mitrovica , SFR Yugoslavia ) is an Albanian and Kosovar singer and radio presenter . Rona Nishliu represented Albania at the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 and finished fifth there after winning the 50th Festivali i Këngës in December 2011  . She is the first Kosovar woman to appear for Albania in the Eurovision Song Contest .

Musical creation

Originally a pop musician , Nishliu is doing more and more experimental jazz with soul influences , based in part on traditional Albanian songs. What is particularly striking is the range of her voice. Another - external - characteristic are their long dreadlocks .

biography

Rona spent the first 13 years of her life in her hometown of Kosovska Mitrovica. Her family lived in the northern part of the city, from where they were displaced in the 1999 Kosovo war . After the war the family lived in Pristina . There she received music lessons and was musically involved in a youth center.

Rona was founded in 2004 in the Albanian talent show Ethet e së premtes mbrëma , marking fifth in the finals of the last ten the beginning of her musical career. In 2004 she appeared for the first time with two other young musicians at the Festivali i Këngës ; the trio was awarded the “Junior Prize”.

She later studied in Pristina and graduated with an economics degree. Rona hosted a daily radio show and produced other songs. She has also worked for various humanitarian projects and supports non-profit organizations. In April 2011 she had her first jazz concert in Prishtina. She was still working as a presenter for Kosovar radio when she won the 50th Festivali i Këngës in December 2011 with her plaintive ballad Suus , thus qualifying as the representative of Albania for the Eurovision Song Contest .

By decree of the Albanian President Bamir Topi , Rona became an Albanian citizen after winning the Festivali i Këngës .

At the Eurovision Song Contest in May 2012, she first had to qualify for the finals in the semi-finals. Of the 18 participants in the first semi-final, she received the second most points. In the final she reached the fifth place and thus achieved the best result in Albania ever. Only Anjeza Shahini was similarly good in 2004 with a seventh place.
